Title: Creak
Post by: Technonot on November 20, 2021, 07:05:47 AM
I’ve had my new Jazz a couple of months, since new there’s been a creak when it comes to a stop and then when moving off, does anybody else have the same experience as I’m trying to determine if it’s a fault or quirk?

Where does the creak emanate from?

If inside, usually it's best to have someone sit in the car with you, or better still, get someone else to drive it, while you go on a creak hunt!

I've had one rattle so far, which turned out to be the 3rd seat belt not being replaced properly.

Also, all kinds of rattles / creaks can come from items stored in the door bins etc. And, with the acoustics of a car, it's easy to be fooled about where the sound originates.

If you mean a creak from the brakes, then it's pretty normal (after it rains / or if there's moisture overnight). Some makes are definitely more prone to this symptom, but nothing to worry about. Things improve by spring / summer.

If another type of creak, we'd need to have more info....

Isn't that the case. I had a tapping sound in a Civic I thought was around the passenger face level air vent. It was only when I had a passenger that they said it sounded like my side.

In the end it was something in the hard sided centre console. A bit of self stick felt cut to size, job done.

Absolutely! I find this alone cuts out the majority of problems (I line all the door bins this way front + rear). Parcel shelves also rattle after a couple of years, so I develop fixes for those too. But making sure everything is either invisible, or done to a standard which looks factory...

Don't forget where the rear outer seat belt metal is close to the hard plastic.

I use heavy duty 2" wide soft side of black Velcro for that.

I sometimes get a creak when reversing down my sloping drive.  But all my other cars have also done it . Possibly because the brakes are bedded in for forward motion. In reverse they may snatch a bit.

I do get some noise from the electric handbrake. Never thought of it as a creak. More a whirring electric motor noise but no  more than I would have expected.  I only really hear it because everything else is so quiet. I cant say I've noticed it when  moving off, but I'll listen out for it  next time.

With my previous car I had got into the bad habit of applying the handbrake a moment before it came to a complete stop.  Do that with the electric handbrake , even with barely perceptible forward motion, the car will stop abruptly with a jolt.  (creak? )   But even with the car definitely at a complete stop I find if I am too hasty applying the handbrake it will whirr more and the car noticeably settle down at the rear.  If I allow a moment for the car to settle and ,as the handbook recommends ,apply the handbrake gradually but firmly   its barely noticeable.

I’m presuming the creak is related to the brakes as when rocking the car side to side there is no creak, however when braking to a stop, as the car dips at the front the creak occurs, the same occurs as the car rises when driving off from standstill, it’s the same irrespective of whether hold assist is engaged or not.
As this is my first hybrid it may be related to the regenerative braking, it’s a loud creak, sounds just like a suspension creak you might get with a noisy anti roll bar bush for example.

Its all to do with the breaking system - nothing to worry about - engine noise on old cars used to mask it!! And if you dont drive for a few days, after getting them wet - they bind briefly.

It’s definitely not the rust build up that happens as soon as the discs get wet and the subsequent removal by the pads when I brake, It’s as though the brakes stick on and cause the suspension to creak.

I have listened out specially.  I do get some noise, although in my case I wouldn't describe it as loud. It sounds to me like brake pads juddering slightly on the disc.  This may be due to some quirk way beyond my technical knowledge , such as Abs brakes, hill start, brake hold, regenerative brakes.

My favourite theory is its  because when stopped the car will still  try to creep forward  on its electrical motor , if you allow it.
When you come to a stop and release the brake pedal there may be a very short moment where the brake pads have released  enough to for the electric motor to attempt to move the car forward ,possibly causing juddering on the lightly applied  brake pads . The rear handbrake will prevent any noticeable forward motion. But there may be a slight delay  due to necessary flexibility in the  springs and suspension.

I sometimes got a similar noise when moving off in stop/ start traffic when I had  held the car on the footbrake.  But not when I had applied the handbrake  (other than the normal noise to be  expected as the mechanism releases.  )

In my case I am happy its normal, and I have dismissed it as one of those functions you dont normally hear due to engine noise.  But your case may be different.

If there are any doubts its best not to take any chances with safety related items . Get it checked by the dealership.  Ideally by the service department, not  sales staff.

I get a creak occasionally, I’ve found that putting the hose right in the wheel when washing seems to clear out the brake dust.

The wheel design on the EX is for fuel efficiency but doesn’t let you clean the inner part of the brake disk unless you actually put the hose in there.

On every other car I’ve had, just spraying it from a distance was enough.

Thanks for all replies, I’ve decided to take it to the dealer and will update the post afterwards.

sounds like my post "Re: Brake/suspension squeak"

Interested in dealer feedback.

Noise has diminished with cold weather this week, road tested with dealer service department, diagnosed as acceptable brake noise.
