Title: How to update your inbuilt Garmin Sat Nav.
Post by: peteo48 on July 23, 2021, 12:10:17 PM
I know there is a thread on the inbuilt Garmin Sat Nav - I've read this but it doesn't cover my query.

So, yesterday, I used the inbuilt sat nav on my Mk3 for the first time in ages and it flashed up that an update was available. They are free, annually, for 5 years.

This is my understanding of the process having watched several very hard to follow You Tube videos and having read some instructions.

1) You purchase a USB Stick (16 gb).

2) You go to your car and start the engine and put the USB stick into a USB port. This will download the car's requirements to the USB stick.

3) You go back to your computer and download the new maps onto the USB stick - this will take 2 to 3 hours.

4) You then go back to the car, start the engine and put the USB stick back in and follow the on screen instructions. You must keep the engine running at all times!

5) After an hour, providing your car hasn't been hijacked or you haven't died from carbon monoxide poisoning, you check whether the download is complete.

Sounds like a monumental PITA and potentially dangerous (car running for an hour in the drive).

So, has anyone tried this? Or, has anybody found somebody who will do all this for a fee. I'd pay £100 for this.

Finally, I'll go android auto next time (and in next car as the Mk3 doesn't support it).

Built in sat navs - no thanks!!!

The process is fine, it doesn't take an hours to upload the map to the unit, it takes about 15 mins and you can actually do it while you are driving. The main reason for saying having the engine running is to protect the battery voltage from dropping during the update.

This is a step by step of the update process:

Thanks for that Steve_M - that seems a logical step by step process - couldn't find this when I looked. I hadn't thought of going for a drive when the updates are uploading - obvious thing to do really.

My IT skills aren't the best though so I asked Honda how much they would charge to do it for me - £114. The lady at the dealership said "I shouldn't be telling you this but I use my phone even though I have a built in sat nav" - phone much better, traffic updates etc etc.

Unfortunately the MK3 doesn't support Android Auto but as I tend not to look at the maps maybe that's the way forward.

Think I might have successfully updated my maps - thanks to Steve_M for the useful links. It wasn't without the odd issue - I had trouble opening Garmin Express for some reason.

That said, it took about 40 minutes for the download to the USB stick and about 15 to 20 minutes to download to the car. I went for a short drive rather than poison the air in the driveway.

Bit of a faff but at least I know how to do it now. If I can do it - anybody can!

I found this thread very helpful in updating the sat nav in my Jazz EX Navi.

I printed off the document from the link given by Steve_M and it was excellent in walking me through the process

I found it mostly straightforward,  but like peteo48 I had some problems runing Garmin Express  (windows reported problems and closed the program a couple of times - I am running WIN 7).  However,  eventually it worked.   Download speed was 2.2 MB/s which is much slower than my internet speed,  and was scheduled to take about 3 hours.  After an hour,  speed picked up to 13 MB/s and in total the download took about 1.5 hours.

Transferring data from the USB stick to the car took about 20 minutes

Garmin require a minimum of 16GB for the flash drive,  so I had to buy one as I did not have any that were big enough.  But a new 32GB drive from the computer shop was only £10

Europe Ver. 2022

I updated mine but had problems even though I used the same 32Gb USB stick for previous 4 times(years)!!!!

Stating that you have to use a 16GB USB stick to avoid an error 'USB Flash Drive Size Limitations/Not Enough Space for a Honda Navigation System'

So beware as Garmin seems to have USB size limitations and don't forget the correct formating of the Stick.

After searching for some time came across this Garmin link:

https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=NbRLVc4dsF90YrWBaSUvF9

USB Flash Drive Size Limitations/Not Enough Space for a Honda Navigation System

The Honda Navigation System update requires a 16GB USB flash drive. Using a USB flash drive smaller or larger than 16GB can cause the map update process to be unsuccessful. The following error message may display: "There is not enough space on the device to install the map update from USB storage device."

Alls well now and would recommend using a USB 3 or 3.1 drive to speed up the download and installation.  £5 from Amazon

My 5 years Garmin support runs out in April 2022 - any suggestions how to extend or change to?

Same for me, I presume that Garmin Express will redirect us to the proper webpage. I'm wondering about the price..

No problem updating. I used the same 32Gb stick as last year (wiped it first).  Approx 3Gb on it after completing the process.

The "up to 1 hour" copying from stick to car took about 7-8 minutes.

I updated the car maps yesterday. After downloading the maps to a pendrive, (of no less than and no more than 64Mb!), the actual installation took about 15 minutes. The car interface was powered but the engine did not need to be running.

Mine is still saying up to date on the 2021.x

I did get a Garmin Express update though.

Having an issue updating mine today. Followed the usual process but the software failed to detect the USB stick previously used. The head unit claims it has written to it and Windows can see it. Ordered a new one and give it another go...
Not heaving much look with technology of late.  :(

I had that when I first used the USB stick and the answer was to format the USB and ensure the Windows format option was changed to 'default allocation units' or something like that

Day 2... followed the same procedure and same problem.
On the next attempt decided to try the USB in the arm rest console and the data was written to the USB stick, only to find out it was up to date anyway, not sure why Garmin software was informing me of the availability..
Another needles purchase from Amazon to pop through the letter box...

I wonder why you can't just buy a USB stick with the new maps on appropriately formatted. I'd pay, I don't know, say fifty quid for that.

There were so many bootleg DVD's about they now protect the content and ensure you are entitled for free or paid update.

It is a pain with a 1 or 2 hour download though.

I'm glad the Mk4 has Google Maps via Android Auto, I probably won't update my built in Garmin mapping given there is no traffic.

Just realized... I already had a USB stick in the armrest with music on it which I took out this morning and suspect that the navigation system may have been sending it the data rather than the one near the lighter.. there was obviously 2 plugged in yesterday and first attempt this morning.

Each map download is specific to the vehicle and has a key so it will only work with that vehicle, so you could not just buy it off the shelf.

I was happy to get my maps updated according to instructions flawlessly for our summer holiday trip. For me it took some 30 min to load the data from a 32 GB USB stick to car.
