My little cheap and cheerful power bank comes with very short jump leads, spanning only about 30 cm (12") in total. Long enough to connect directly to the Jazz battery terminals ,(and most but possibly not all, larger batteries. ) Or alternatively the red lead to the battery and the black lead directly to a nearby bolt on the engine block . But either way all connections would be made very near the battery.
In my ignorant and reckless youth I often jump started directly to the battery terminals, and lived to tell the tale. And that was in the days of topping up cells.
Is there still a risk of explosive gases from a sealed ,maintenance free battery? Or is the recommended procedure just to be on the safe side for any type.
I always carry some conventional jump leads, as a belt and braces approach, so could if necessary extend the negative lead of the power bank using one of those.

Jazz GK series wants one of the following EFB battery:
Yuasa YBX7053
MIDAC Itineris EFB JIS IT55J EFB
FIAMM ECOFORCE AFB TRN45
Banner 55515
Napa AFB158N
Enduroline 048EFB
Maybe there are some other models fitting in the slot, I don't know, would be great adding them to this post.
Using a non EFB or AFB battery (AGM or standard lead-acid) will affect the battery lifespan.
Thanks for this really useful post, I'm also in need of a new battery. Can I just check with you if the above batteries are suitable for my car as well? We have a 2018 MK3 1.5L Sport. I'm not sure if the 1.5 Sport requires a different battery. Also, do you need to register or code the battery when replacing it or is it a straight swap as you do with a normal battery?

« Last post by Jocko on September 23, 2023, 10:56:57 PM »Removing the cat will make no difference to the sound but it will cause all sorts of problems with your engine running. The ECU depends on signals from the sensors mounted on the cat.

The other day I went to unlock the car and the key fob only half did the job, it started to operate the locking but not completely. I checked the battery and it still read 3.17 volts, but suspect it's that which is the fault. The other key fob works fine.
Have ordered a couple of Energiser ones from Amazon (not the 'cheapo' ones as they sometimes don't last long.
Can you tell me; is it just a case of just changing the battery, or do you have to do some kind of programming from the car?

P.S the car's only done 70K now and found it to be very reliable.
I replaced the batteries in both of my keys just last week, also with Energizer batteries. One key was completely dead and the other may not have been far off. Both work perfectly now, no coding.

I have a genuine Honda filter lined up and whilst I'm sure the blueprint filter is fine, I'm willing to splash a bit on genuine. Will I notice an impact on fuel economy with a slightly thicker oil?
Using Fuelly and comparing the results of 5 years using 0w-20 oil and 5 years of 5w-30, my average deteriorated by 0.5mpg . Given the wide range of travel over that time, conditions etc.. I would say miniscule.
Don't think I'll worry about mpg then haha

Why don't they fit a normal battery anyway?I think that you are misunderstanding the general concept: The HV-battery gets completely disconnected from the system once the car is powered down *) (not the least for safety reasons!).
The 12V battery has absolutely nothing to do with cranking the ICE, so any "jump start" attempts to start the ICE are futile at best; you can only charge the 12V battery to a decent level so that it can serve its main purpose: start-up the power management system from the HV-battery. Furthermore it is here to allow for common 12V - read "cheap" - peripherals like radio, sat-nav, light-bulbs etc components.
*) which is exactly, why manually charging the HV-battery to the max before a months stand-still is such a bad idea.
Have you ever noticed that during normal operation the system never charges the battery to 10 bars (except on long down-hill cruises and we all know how "unwell" the system feels with all the excess charge), but tries to keep the charge level between 3 to 7 bars? (this is called "flat cycling" which is considered best for a Li-Ion battery).
You are however welcome to believe whatever you want and manually charge the HV-battery to the max (because Honda by default doesn't) - it is your money going down the drain for an early replacement not mine
Mind you: I'm all in for charging the 12V battery or even keep it branched to a good maintainig charger before or/and during a longer stand-still!
