Honda+ App and Tracking function
« on: February 17, 2024, 12:01:55 PM »
Hi Guys
Just a quick question.
I have the Honda+ App installed on my phone and also actuated in the car.
The system includes a Tracking function,  whereby I can locate  the car, at all times.

Is this facility good enough, for my insurance company to accept that  there is a ‘Tracking device fitted’ in the car and hopefully qualify for a discount on the premium?

I would ask the insurance direct since finding out afterwards it did not qualify could invalidate any claim. I'm not at all sure, it is not a dedicated anti-theft tracker in the vein of add on hardware advertsied as such, and requires the subscription to maintain.

As it can be turned off with a couple of taps of the audio screen, it can hardly be described as a stolen vehicle tracker, any serious car their would just disable it.

NFU does not accept it as tracking device for insurance purposes

My insurance is due end of March and I’m currently with NFU, so you have answered my question, many thanks.

I just wondered whether our resident insurance expert would like to comment on this?

Also can Steve M, tell us how the feature can be disabled, ‘with a couple of taps on the audio screen’ ?

Yes, I would like to know this too. I can't find anything that links the car infotainment to the app on my phone.

Easily done:  (manual page 303)

Try: Display Audio -> Customized Features -> Location and vehicule data sharing -> off

Once the location sharing is disabled it will be difficult for the app to further track the car.

I have been reading about a thing called “ghost” which requires a 4 digit pin to be entered before the car can be started. Seems a lot of range rover drivers are having it installed due to massive insurance quotes. Be interesting to know what Honda themselves could do with such technology

My first M reg Citroen Xantia had that as standard

Must have been more trouble than it was worth as my second and third Xantias (N and R reg) didn't have it
Let's be careful out there !

Turning it off is as easy as turning it one before registration. One press from the start up screen gets you to the location and data sharing setting.

Not sure of  the code in order to start the car.
However a  4 digit code,  to gain access to the settings pages would be useful, so that the ‘sharing’ can’t be disabled by perps.

I looked into the Ghost system when I got the E which does not have a switch off keyfob, it costs £500 plus installation if you have it done at home. The pin sequence is actually some button presses you program yourself, eg stalk, windows, radio etc, without which even a cloned key or OBD hacker cannot start the car, it can only be towed away. There is a simpler mode you can set for eg servicing without the full code revealed. There are some reports of problems with some cars, I suppose the least popular ones where they do not have a lot of experience with the canbus system. The idea is so good it is a wonder car manufacturers do not build in something similar with all the publicity about keyless thefts.
At the end of the day a faraday pouch was cheaper.

Excuse the pun, but is there any ‘mileage’ in using an Apple air Tag for tracking purposes?

Just looked online and read the drawbacks…..
