According to the service history, our 2008 Jazz has always been filled with 5W-30 - 170-odd thousand miles and the engine hasn't exploded yet, so something must be right. Sounds like a sewing machine.

Main dealer serviced our 2015 last year, just before purchase, they used Shell Helix synthetic 5W-30. They've starting bugging the other half to take it in for another service, I'm afraid they're out of luck.

I've just bought Comma X-Tech 5W-30 fully synthetic motor oil. My daughter is driving easily 100 miles a day. I've now got to teach her how to check her oil and how often.

Another question roughly how much for a service, was quoted £180 to £210?

Main dealer?

https://www.honda.co.uk/cars/owners/3-years-plus.html

Fixed price £180 for a basic oil service, £290 for super duper including air, pollen filters and brake fluid. £90 extra for CVT.

Plus the bits of work they 'find'.

Thanks for the link sparky Paul. I usually buy my car parts from Eurocarparts, but delivery time is quite long.

Continuously variable transmission - a system of belts and conical pulleys used in some vehicles,  they do not have fixed gears.

Used Castrol in my early motorbikes ( British parallel twins were notoriously hard on the oil ).   When  Mobil 1 fully synthetic     first hit the market in 1980's  switched to that ( had a Ford Sierra then ) and was happy with the way the engine would spin over easily in winter when starting due to oil being thinner when cold.  When Castrol bought out fully synth oils I have used them ever since - about the same time I switched to Honda - all my cars have done lots of miles and I have never had one need any top up between changes ( Had  Civic that did 190,000 miles and still sweet and used no oil ) had Jazzes that have done over 100K ( one did 130K ) - and needed no top ups.   I normally get from Opie oils or even Halfrauds if oil on offer and decent price.  Still use Castrol in my motorbikes ( has to be clutch friendly for 'wet' clutches in bikes - where engine oil is shared between engine, clutch and gearbox ).   Funnily highly stressed bike engines normally use 10W40 oil.  In car I use 5W30 Magnatec ( Magnatec  stop-start 5W30 often on offer,  even seen it in Tesco for less than £30 - I don't have stop-start but the oil spec is good ).

Bought one of these a few years ago and very useful - have used it for a lot of things other than sucking engine oil out through dipstick hole ( although it has been used for that and I measure the amount of oil it sucked out and it seemed to get it all ) - only change filter every two years now as my annual mileage is not high any more.   Makes changing oil a doddle and means you don't have to worry about drain plug washers and it you over or under tightened it etc.

Is servicing a Honda Jazz an easy job to do? I usually service my wife's old  Clio as it's easy to do.

No more difficult than the Clio.

If you want easy, get yourself one of the vacuum oil extractors mentioned above.

Thanks everyone. I usually borrow a Haynes manual from the local library, but since they are closed are there any online resources you could recommend?

The official Honda service manual is a useful online resource

http://www.hondafitjazz.com/manual.html

Servicing is very straightforward though, the only unusual thing to bear in mind is that there are 8 spark plugs to change.

I have the Haynes manual for the Mk1 Jazz. It's as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
