Title: What Are You On About Grampy !
Post by: Derkie54 on February 01, 2022, 04:26:48 PM
Had my son & grandson in the car for the first time and my son remarked on how easy the Mk4 was to drive.
I said yes the days of pulling out the choke and whatever are long gone.
My grandson said " pull out the choke " what are you on about grampy........ how things have moved on  :)

I said to him I can say something else you wouldn't understand.
" Get off the internet I want to use the phone "
Those were the days when we all had dial up with the shared line  :)

One time my brother was having bother with his car and a quick check of the points soon put it right. After that, if any of his workmates had bother with their cars he'd tell the "Check the points" and more often or not it worked. As a result, he became the car guru. Alas, no more. The days of cleaning out the float chamber or adjusting the points are long gone, never to return. In a few years time checking the oil and the radiator will be akin to getting out the starting handle is now.

I used to be sent in to the front room to turn on the TV so it would warm up ready in time for the programme we wanted to watch. And we seemed to have the TV rental company repair guy round every few weeks. Nobody sane bought a TV outright.

A friend of my dad moved house and Redifusion came and took the telly back to the shop for repair instead of repairing it onsite because they were not allowed to work on TV's on a concrete floor even though it was carpeted.

The choke knob  was a good place to hang your handbag apparently.

Renting TV's was more my parents era  ;)     TV's were reliable enough to buy  when I first set up home  , but a small colour TV cost the equivalent of  about £2500 at todays prices. :o

I recall my parents' ruby red bakelite valve radio. You had to switch it on 5 mintes before the program started. It whistled when you tuned it.
Rebuilding the magneto on my 1929 Riley 9 Monaco fabric bodied sallon in 1968  (I was a student). No water pumps then - thermo syphon, and a crankshaft mounted dynamo when overheated and had to be switched off over 40mph or it would burn out. Starting it with a starting handle when the battery was flat..

Axle tramp on my 1946 Rover 16 Sports Saloon - terrifying .

Living in the country near Macduff in Banffshire and seeing the ice crystals form on the window insides on a cold night.. The cold draught from coal fires drawing draughts in under the doors. 3 meter snowdrifts outside our back door in 1963.

Sranding on the chassis inside the engine compartment of my brother's 1952 sidevalve Ford Prefect and lifting out the engine by hand...

As a teenager in the late 70's one of our rental TVs was housed within a cabinet that had a sliding door made of thin strips of the same wood, it would be a nice piece of furniture now. It also had touch sensors, similar to a coin slot to change the chanel, being a lazy youth and closest to the TV I learnt to use my toe to change the channel. As the house was quite cold would have to give my toe a warm up on the cabinet.
I also remember my dad buying a Panasonic VHS that came with two remotes and a scan sheet with codes to program timer recordings. Different times.

similar to a coin slot
Not that we ever had one but I remember you could hire coin slot TVs. Nominal rental then you had to put money in the slot to watch a programme. Probably made you more selective about what you watched.

I bought a load of blanks for all the formats, +&-R, RW etc and haven't got a recorder anymore. My brother records a lot of programs to both the HDD and disc, probably more than he's got time to watch.

Favourite fixes in late 1950's , To reduce high fuel consumption - fit stronger spring to carb; To improve car performance MK1 - adjust accelerator cable untill it was like harp string, MK2 as for 1 plus Peco chrome exhaust tip to silencer nice and loud. My favourite for old Beetles with neglected engines run the fuel down then add pint of paraffin - watch the owner drive away happy in a light haze. Happy days.

Remember the old 1950's Anglia that had vacuum wipers. Almost stopped under some circumstances.

Then the semaphone indicators on the old A30's

I replaced the vacuum wipers on my 56 Ford Prefect with an electric set from a Mini.
My Dad had a 47 Ford Anglia and to turn right he would indicate then once cancelled would thump the B pillar so the semaphore would drop back in.

My 1931 Austin 7 had no indicators at all. :o  Arm out for right, arm rotated for left and up and down for braking (it didnt have brake lights either )    Legal  for the age of car  although it confused some mot testers until I fitted modern flashing  indicators and brake lights. Originality is pushing your luck - they dont even  teach hand signals any more.  I doubt many would spot semaphores either.

My 1958 sidevalve Reliant, was mostly reliable. Compared to the motorbikes, I used to ride....  ::)
My party trick, was to change the head gasket, in 90mins at the side of the road. Every few months!

I cured it. By chiselling a crosswise shallow groove, in head and block, between nos 2 and 3 cylinders. It never blew again, in my ownership!  ;D

Ah the good old days when you could rebuild ,or even remove ,an engine at the roadside.  The reliant engine was a close relation to the Austin 7 engine  btw.  Not unknown for enthusiasts to carry a head gasket in the car and replace it in a layby.

Its still quite common to see big Tata and  Ashock Leyland Trucks having their engines rebuilt, including new pistons etc, at the roadside in India.  I've even seen them having their engine rebuilt  whilst broken down in the 'fast' lane of dual carriageways.   :o

I was that soldier!
New gasket taped to the wall, up near the roof. Out of harm's way. And, a gallon of top-up water.....

Reminds me of a friend who sent his mum to collect a new head gasket for him whilst he was at work.

She collected it and folded it in half so it fitted in her bag !!!
