rear washer
« on: September 25, 2021, 01:39:44 AM »
if i use my rear washer it runs the motor for a few seconds before any water comes out which is probably normal as its got a long way to go to the back, but if you squirt if again after 30 seconds it takes the same time to come out again which is odd as the water should remain in the pipe i would have thought

anyone else experience this ?

i was just worried about the pump burning out or something, but it must have water in it so it should be ok

the front washers are instant

does it just have one pump for the front and rear or two pumps one for each end?

Two pumps.
On my mk2 and presumably your mk3 the connector closest to the jets is a non return valve. Sounds as if yours is letting water run back and allowing air in. Try clearing it with a blast of air. If that doesn't work a replacement would only be a couple of quid.

One pump on the Mk3, and it will probably be your non-return valve that's a bit gunged up due to little use. There's a longish thread on the subject here:

Just out of interest, if there's only one pump, what prevents water coming out of both front and rear when the pump's operated? Is there some sort of diverter or isolation valve somewhere in the pipework?

I've just had a quick look at the diagram in the link I posted, and it appears both front and rear pipework goes to the same 'pump set'. This would suggest the pump either spins in opposite directions or there is some diverter in said 'pump set'. Selection of front or rear is via the separate switches operated within the car.
I haven't seen an electrical schematic to confirm my assumptions above.

thanks for the replys guys and what is the best way to get the the pump, will i have to remove the front wheel arch liner?

i had a look at the diagram and it is the little plastic join when you open the boot

you can hear noise if you go to the back like its air going into the system so it must be that

im ok with it if the pump isnt being overheated buy pumping air, which it shouldnt be as it is the same pump as the front

Try non return valve first.
Hopefully you won't have to go near the pump.

im glad they put it where you can get to it ok and if you squirt it and then walk to the back of the car you can hear slight gurgle noise from the jet

Different pump rotation direction, supplying +12V for front washer, -12v for rear washer.
As soon as the pump starts rotating, a little piston moves itself (pushed by the liquid pressure) closing the wrong exit.
This is a low pressure pump, used for front and rear screen. Cars with headlight washers have high pressure pumps and a bigger tank.

Take valve out and try soaking it then blowing air through it.

Worked for Badger and me.
Worth a shot.
I used a bicycle pump with a Schraeder valve attachment that compressed an O ring round the valve body. There must be other options.

There are cheap generic ones on the internet.
Hope that fixes it and you don't have to get involved with the pump.
