3rd gear problem
« on: March 05, 2020, 12:02:08 AM »
Hi all. I bought a 2004 used honda jazz last week. Car seemed ok on 1st day but started getting whirring kind of sound when accelerating. Now when engine is warmed up I have trouble getting into 3rd gear. I have to really force it in gear. Took to garage who told me it will cost £1000+ to repair. Anyone have any advice for me on this issue please. I am new to the forum. Thanks in advance

The whirring gears is a common problem and quite a few threads here are worth a look. If you go to the Mk1 forum then search noisy gearbox you'll find lots of information. The good news it's unlikely to completely breakdown - as I understand it just gets louder over time. Also there are gearbox specialists who can fix it for more like £400 depending where you are.

I think the sticking third gear may be a different issue. My first thought is to check the clutch.

Or is it? What do you think?

First of all, where did you buy car from,  if a private or auction sale it is a case of 'sold as seen' and you have little or any warranty.  If however you got it from a registered car dealer ( does not have to be a Honda dealer ) you have 30 days to reject the car, and 6 months warranty in law - during which period it is assumed in law that any fault that happens was there when car was purchased.  If you bought from a car dealer it is very important that you register the fault in writing to them ASAP.... by email or by normal mail recorded delivery ( they have to sign for it ).  Do not leave it too long and remember you have rights in law irrespective of what the dealer gave you... contact local citizens advice bureau or trading standards - or if you are AA or RAC member they may help.

Thanks guys for quick reply. I guess it would be ok to still drive but problem wil get louder. The guy offered for me to return the car for my money back cause he bought it and never drove it so didn't know it had this problem. I guess I will return the car and not buy another honda jazz if they have this similar problem

The standard Jazz gearbox noise doesn't normally cause any problems selecting gears.

I agree, and synchromesh problems more likely to happen on gear 1 and 2.  Maybe clutch dragging but that would affect first gear more I guess, so it may be to do with linkage between gear lever and gearbox,  but that is not a common problem on Jazz AFAIK

Did you buy from a dealer then ? For a private seller to offer money back is very generous as they are under no obligation to do so ( unless they are a mate ).
