Tyre Mileage
« on: January 28, 2013, 05:23:53 PM »
As you may know I am a driving instructor and my Jazz Hybrid is my tuition car, so it takes a bit of abuse, lots of reversing, slow speed manoeuvres, emergency stops etc.
Anyway, the original Michelin Energy tyres lasted to 24k on the front. I was quite happy with that but had trouble finding replacements, so went with my second choice of Yokohamas which were on a discount at the local tyre dealer. The Yokos have only lasted 16k, so now at 40k I am about to have my THIRD pair of front tyres fitted.
After lots of phoning around it appears that Michelin Energy Saver 175/65/15H are hard to find, so I am going with the lower speed rating of T, although I still think 118mph speed rating will be plenty of room for error. I have been quoted £66 a tyre, including balancing, fitting and vat.  :o

The Blackcircles speed rating lookup http://www.blackcircles.com/general/speedrating indicates a T rating for my hybrid.

What about your rear tyres? Are they still the original ones?

I believe your car does a lot of stand still wheel turning, eg. when parking and that eats the front tyres.

I do a lot of motorway driving (75%) and swapping around the tyres every 6k miles (rear to front as in the handbook), now I`ve 47k miles in all of the 4 tyres, the thread depth is down to 2.5-3mm around (summers). Soon I`ll replace them, currently winters are on on separate rims.

One rear tyre is the original, the other has had 2 punctures, and when the second one occured it was too close to the first one, so the tyre was replaced, but still loads of tread on the original, I reckon it will get to 60k no problem.
I leave the same tyres on all year, so no swapping for winter rubber.
I feel they could have lasted a bit longer had they not worn excessively on the inside edge, despite having the tracking checked when the new tyres were fitted (July 2012) and at the two punctures (Oct and Nov 2012), it just appears learners driving style eats tyres ! Nothing new there.

The sole original tyre lasted to 60k.

My latest pair of front tyres, have lasted 27500 miles and still have 3-4mm tread left, and tonight got a puncture in the sidewall courtesy of a pothole, so I am buying a pair, so should have gone to around 30-32k.

I think £66 per tyre is cheap.  They cost double that here.  Excellent tyres though, Ozzie
