Turn off Navigation?

I sometimes just want to tell the built-in Garmin to stop and go away.  But is there a quick shortcut for this?  Thanks.

On the left side of the screen you find an octogram with an X. Put one finger on it and it stops guiding you.

I can't get my head round the question.

If you don't want navigation then don't set it up
If you want navigation but no nags then turn the navigation sound to zero
If you don't want the maps then press one of the other display options

Sounds easy, but after a year of use, I've yet to find how to do that.

Press volume to turn off voice directions and radio comes on. 
The simplest solution seems to be to press the X in red circle.
