Another oil question (Sorry!)
« on: August 23, 2020, 01:20:08 PM »
Hi all. I have a 2012 Jazz ES 1.4 manual. Registered in Nov.2012, but is apparently a 2013 model year car.
Castrol and Mobil web sites both state that 5w 30 is the correct engine oil up to Dec 2012, but in 2013 the only correct oil is 0w 20. Why is this, as the engine code remains the same as L13Z1 before and after 2012/2013 ? I am sure both oils are fine, and the handbook states both ok. I wont bother asking HUK, as all I get is no help really for previous oil queries. Bought some Honda 0W 20 type 2 oil, but there is nothing on the back of the can to say what ILSAC it is or API too. HUK couldnt supply a data sheet, and didn't know what it was. I thought a safety data sheet was a legal requirement. Found out via forums it is a Synthetic blend (Semi Synthetic) from Philips in Germany . Honda UK recommends ILSAC GF5 and API SN or better. Why don't they state on packaging what their own oil conforms to ? Any help on this much appreciated

Honda's standard oil is 0w-20

You can use 5w-20,5w-30, of the correct spec..Fuel consumption on my experience is approx 0.5mpg worse.

Fuel consumption on my experience is approx 0.5mpg worse.
And that can easily be recovered with a bit of anticipation while driving.

Thanks for the replies. My question was why does the oil requirement change overnight 2012 to 2013.

I don't know if this is the case here but car manufacturers do make changes to maintenance schedules from time to time. Honda changed the CVT fluid change interval for example. In the case of the oil I wonder if it was a decision to improve, albeit only slightly, fuel consumption.

Not an answer exactly but I have come across similar things over my motoring career.

The owners manual actually has a little diagram showing the range of oil weights you can use depending on the ambient temps you will experience, there is a bit of flexibility.

I wouldn't use 0W-20 unless I lived north of the arctic circle
