Hello.
I recently got a 2005 Honda Jazz 1.2 at 211k miles. I've read quite a few of the threads on here related to my problems, but I was left slightly confused (mainly about oil type) and decided to ask for advice directly.
The three problems are in the title:
1. ERG error p0401
The check engine light is on. The previous owner was told by some garage to drive like this. One of the first things I did when I got the car was buy a cheap elm327 diagnostic. Error is p0401 insufficient flow. I cleaned the EGR valve perfectly, it was very clogged. The moving valve inside can now move freely (now whether it opens while the car is running is another question I don't know). That didn't do it, and eventually I found out that the cooling under the EGR and the intake pipes had to come off as well. I took everything off and cleaned with EGR spray. The metal plate between the intake manifolds and the engine was 100% plugged. Only on the intake pipes I left a very thin layer of carbon deposits, since I had to finish already and didn't have time to finish cleaning (I figured it wouldn't be a problem considering the pipes are wide and the deposits superficial).
After all of that, the check lit up again after 20-30km. The only thing I'm thinking right now is the EGR valve itself is gone / MAP sensor.
2. Oil
The car burns a lot of oil.
3/4 of the dipstick is gone in about 350km. Changed it before the 350km in question with Total 10w40 oil, choice of the guy I took it to, you be the judge if it's good or not.
After reading a few comments from people in the forums, I got the impression that 10w40 is the worst possible oil type for a Honda Jazz, with 5w30 being recommended at most, with one guy even having his oil consumption stop after switching from 10 40 to 5 30. The problem is that 10w40 has been used with this car from the start (I have a service history from the beginning of the car) and even in the booklet itself the oil is listed as a possible option. And now I'm quite confused as to what action to take.
It is clear to me that it is almost certain that the engine wants an overhaul, but I have come across cases where the problem has been solved in other ways and of course as a rookie, I prefer to try the cheaper options first and hope for the best.
The oil doesn't leak, I left a cardboard underneath for a few days. I got down under the car and recorded a video with my phone to check what's going on. It looks like the area around the sump seal has fresh oil around it, but I don't think almost a litre went there.
The engine does have a good bit of oil spilled on it, on the oil cap side, but it honestly doesn't look fresh to me and there's not nearly a quart of oil left in there...
3. Fuel consumption
8.8l/100km shows the car - only city driving.
I haven't gone out of town yet to unclog it as some recommend. I've read that valve adjustment helps with consumption and it seems clear enough to do it myself, with the right tool of course.
It smells like petrol from the back of the exhaust.

Otherwise the car runs perfect, smooth, after cleaning the throttle, the rough-idle disappeared. Can't complain if I wasn't looking under the hood and at the fuel consumption..
Excuse me for the long post. Thanks in advance for the advice. ^_^
