Whirring noise on setting off when cold
« on: March 16, 2021, 09:52:51 PM »
My Mk3 Jazz (3,000 miles on clock) has started making a whirring sound when setting off from cold intermittently.  After driving for about 10 seconds the whirring noise comes on for about 5 seconds then stops.  It seems to be coming from the engine area.  Has anyone experienced this?

it could be the a/c compressor as that makes a noise cycling on for 5 seconds and off for 10 to 15 seconds

I have experienced that in very cold (below -20 C) for first mile or so. I have AC off in cold weather, so has to be something else.

fwiw, my 57 CVT jazz sometimes makes an electric whirring noise for a second very shortly after starting the engine and driving off. It's not from the fans or aircon compressor but seems to be coming from engine bay, may be left side.

The electric motor like noise is a higher pitch than normal radiator fan noise.  Sounds like something opening or closing?  It may only happen in cold temperatures but don't quote me.  I thought perhaps there may be an electrically operated diverter flap on air intake, if the DSi engine even has one.  This may or may not be same symptoms on Mk3 ?

Now when I read the original post twice more I think he may have different noise that I am speaking about. It sounds like it might be the VTC actuator or then ABS unit. I have no idea what model year 57 means, but there has been VTC noise problems especially in early GK Jazzes.

In my car the noise comes when I have got from my yard to the highway and it comes and goes gradually a few times within the first mile or so.

57 plate is 2007/08, so mark 1 (GD1-GE3)
