2018 EX alloy wheel rot..
« on: July 23, 2022, 12:32:26 PM »
I thought that our wheels, around the centre caps may have been damaged when the tyres were changed in 2021 but it doesn't seem to be an area where contact with the floor could cause it.
A bit miffed to say the least...

Unfortunately a common problem with diamond cut lacquered alloy wheels.
The lacquer fails after a few years and you get this white corrosion.
Shame you didn't mention it to Honda last year in warranty, they may have replaced the wheels or had them refinished for you.
Probably around £60 a wheel to have them relacquered.
If you are handy, get the wheel off, pop the centre cap badge out, carefully sand it back with fine wet and dry paper, and then give that area a few coats of clear lacquer.

When new the wheels were put on a special lathe and the alloy cut back using  precision diamond cutters  that leaves a consistent pattern of cutting, which reflects light in a certain way .

I have never done the job  but from what i have read, rubbing down  to remove corrosion destroys this cutting pattern, and the difference WILL  show.  The best you can hope for is a slight improvement over what it was before.
They may  look quite reasonable  if the rubbing down is confined to an equal  narrow band around the centre bore caps, sufficiently wide to include the affected area.  While obviously different from the diamond cutting pattern this  band may look quite neat and consistent in its own right,  rather than random areas of rubbing down.

The most satisfactory way to refurbish diamond cut wheels is for an expert to turn them on a specialist diamond cutting lathe diamond cutting a whole new face. (then respraying in clear laquer )     Apparently having them recut more than once or twice can remove so much alloy they risk being weakened.

The other alternative is to abandon having 'fancy' diamond cut wheels , rub them down completely and get them resprayed or powder coated in conventional solid  paint colour such as silver.  Especially if the wheel has some deep kerbing scuffs etc that may be too deep to cut back on  a lathe and need filling.   But having this done professionally (to all 4 wheels) , may cost more than having a wheel recut, or a new wheel.

I hadn't noticed this until somewhat recently and thought it maybe damage from when they fitted replacement tyres in March 2021 at the first MOT, so a year and a bit later.
I'll monitor it and take on the advice about possibly just having them redone without the diamond cut finish.
I'll way up whether I'd prefer to replace the car in the next few years too, I feel I would have preferred the SE model for a few reasons.

Bird mess can also cause this, as my dad found out on his Kia. Stone chips can also cause the laquer to lift.

As said above, this is a common problem with diamond cut alloys.

All four of my wheels have the exact same corrosion and my car has only done 15K miles  :( One day I'll get them repainted in either silver or black - not sure what would look best on the EX?

It's a common fault on most alloy wheels, with diamond cut wheels tending to be more susceptible as has been said by others.

Any chip in the laquer will allow corrosion to form quite quickly, especially if subjected to salt or acid/alkaline in general.

One of the main culprits is the use of acidic wheel cleaners, particularly if you use one of the drive-in car cleaning companies rather than do it yourself.
One of the clues to see if acidic wheel cleaners have been used is the colour of your brake calipers. If the paint has degraded and gone dull, or the calipers are a dull grey colour, then there's a good chance that aggressive acidic/alkaline cleaners have been used previously.

If you clean your wheels yourself, then I would recommend using a good pH neutral wheel cleaner along with a decent set of wheel brushes.

Life was so much simpler back in the day when plastic hub caps were usual  (and didnt cost over £100 each  ) or  if you had alloys, could just waft them over with a rattle can of  wheel silver. :-*  .

Plastic hub caps ........ like the Mk4  :)

Lexus were forever replacing wheels on the IS200. When they started to go they went fast, usually between 3 and 4 years.
Let's be careful out there !

Bilberry wheel cleaner is alkaline-based but can be diluted.

Fair point, but just posting what I have used on various cars and wheel finishes for years with no ill effects.

I think silver looks a bit dated these days. But then  black doesnt suit all body colours.   Maybe a compromise, some sort of gun metal/pewter colour?

Check out this web site.  They have a 360 degree configurator where you can change the colour of the car  then see how the various  aftermarket wheels they sell look when fitted.   If you ignore the style but try it out  with wheels in various colours  it may help to decide  your favourite.      The link is for Jazz mk4 but they probably do other Jazz models.

Or if you have photoshop, and possibly other photo editing suites  you could have a photo of your car with its current wheels and change the wheel colours digitally.

Thinking about it... Could this have been damage from the hubs used to exchange then balance the tyres, that is, when they secured them and it maybe scratches?

I never used it but Bilberry should'nt cause any problems, probably far safer than an acid-based wheel cleaner. It might only need to be used on heavily soiled wheels with normal car shampoo being sufficent inbetween.

I've had good results with Meguairs Ultimate wheel cleaner. I picked it up off Amazon a few years ago for £12 for just under 500ml (being American, Meguairs' products come in fluid ozs) but I couldn't recommend it at its RRP of £17. The Bilt Hamber wheel cleaner works out cheaper and like Meguairs comes with fallout remover.

Could be. A tyre fitter once chipped one of my wheels when removing the centre cap. As mine are normal silver finish no corrosion set in.

Incidently, my Jazz is now 15 years old and cover 124,000 miles. The only the nearside front wheel has bubbles of corrosion around the centre cap and tyre valve. This is the only wheel that has been refurbished (by the insurance company's repair centre after an accident); all the other wheels still have the factory finish and no signs of corrosion.
