1000 miles in new Crosstar
« on: July 05, 2021, 01:10:17 PM »
Folks, thought id give a few thoughts on the first 1000 miles..... ;D

*can't think of another car ive enjoyed the first month as much as this one
*if anything the Crosstar has grown on me since purchase
*i'm left thinking that when a small car does so many things so well, whats the point in looking at bigger, more expensive vehicles
*although the motoring press rate the new Jazzes highly, I still think they're a bit reluctant to put out there how good it is
*great comfort
*fun to drive
*loads of data onboard - try not to be distracted while driving obviously, but love statistics
*has every feature I really need/have wanted in a car
*for a small car, very refined on a motorway long haul with ACC and LKAS working well
*economy over 1000 miles averaging 62mpg without trying - just let the car do its thing - single journey high score just over 80mpg
*its even quite quick
*like the looks of Crosstar, its certainly quirky, understated, but functional
*build quality excellent
*spill proof seats tested accidentally with coffee - they work!
*dealer experience good, maybe not Lexus or Toyota standard, but still very good
*would i swap it for a Fiesta or a Polo - absolutely not

what id refine or change -
*RDMS is the big one - its not very good, too sensitive and distracting especially in a country/backroad environment  :( always turn it off
*boot light is a bit weedy
*tyres are a weird size - for when it comes to replacement
*ACC works well overall, but is mildly aggressive in its responses, could do with smoothing out a little, and given 5mph jump increments instead of 10mph

But all in all very impressive little car - enjoy every drive  :D 8)

cheers!

Love mine, very comfortable to drive and great legroom in the back for passengers. Average around the 63mpg and I’m very happy with that.

Is the RDMS the same as the LKAS?  Just had a courtesy Crosstar and found the correction on country roads over sensitive and annoying . Otherwise great.

Yes, RDMS is very annoying, particularly on narrow country roads (as has been posted elsewhere)
It has to be switched off at each start-up and sometimes I forget!.
However, it is really a minor problem, in what is otherwise the best Jazz yet.
Hopefully at some point there might be a software update, that will ensure that it can be switched off permanently like LKAS, but I won't hold my breath!

No, LKAS is "lane keep assist" which is normally reserved for motorway use and the steering automatically adjusts to keep the car within the white lines.
The RDMS sensitivity can be adjusted, it may be the one you test drove didn't have the least sensitive setting

Well I am at 250 miles in a Crosstar and would largely agree with your “positives”.  I would also add amazing legroom front and back. I am 6ft 2 inch and can get very comfortable and with driver seat at rearmost setting, still plenty of room in the back.

With regard to the “negatives” I would put mine in this order:

RDMS (dangerous and irritating distraction when on).
Lack of spare wheel or space saver (I know it’s because of the lithium battery).
Oddball tyre size. Why? Can’t fathom this out.
My Honda + App.  Really dire and won’t be paying for any subscription.

Overall, delighted with the purchase.

Yep agree that the oddball tyre size is a strange choice - well actually the only tyre I care about because ive used a while on our other car is Goodyear Vector 4-Seaons Gen 3 - its a brilliant tyre.  So mildly disappointed I cant fit to the Crosstar  :-[

You have to ask why Honda chose to fit 185x60 R16 oddball size tyres. Why not 195x60 R16 for which there is a much better (and cheaper) choice? Only real option is to go for 195x55 R16 which keeps the speedometer within 2% accuracy. It's that lack of awareness that worries me about Honda in the UK.

The Mk2 EX had an oddball size when it first came out: 185/55 R16. This is now more readily available a decade later, but still more expensive than the 175/65R15 of the lower spec models. The Mk4 EX uses the same size tyre.
