I want to trickle charge the 12v. battery in my Mk. 4 Jazz and it's not possible to use a 13 amp plug as I have to park in the road. I don't want to use a solar panel device as I found them to be somewhat ineffective, so I wonder if there's a charger that is self contained, that will sit under the bonnet, and has a built-in rechargeable battery itself, rather like one of those portable self-contained tyre inflators.
I haven't seen one so maybe they don't exist, but interesting if they did.

If it only provides 12v DC it will not charge a battery, that needs 14 volts+

Thanks Trebor - that's great for jump starting if push came to shove - but in fact I was really thinking of something more gentle, like trickle charging so as to avoid the jump start. Maybe nobody does it though.

This will cost too much !!!
you will need 2 devices - power generator with AC 220v output and trickle charger itself

There are solar powered trickle chargers that do work. Unfortunately the majority of the ones on the market are advertised as 10W are not and do very little. You also have to have it wired to the battery not simply plugged into the cigarette lighter socket as the cig socket only comes on when you have the key in the 2 position iirc.
I seem to remember watching video reviews of more powerful solar-powered trickle chargers in the states that work really well. Although we don't get as much sun in the UK, I think they will work but perhaps more slowly. I use small solar panels (A4 sized) to charge batteries and although it takes a bit longer, it does the job nicely.
The alternative is (as I'm sure you already know) is to do regular longer journeys and to keep a pocket-sized battery jump starter in the car for occasions when the battery is low.
