Steering wheel anti-theft lock not engaging
« on: September 08, 2018, 09:31:09 PM »
Hi.

I just bought my 2012 Jazz today from Arnold-Clark. When I got home with the car, I found that when I switched off the engine, and removed the ignition key, I couldn't get the steering lock to engage.

With any other car that I've owned, getting the anti-theft steering lock to engage is a simple matter of removing the key and giving the wheel a slight left/right movement, and it's done.

Unfortunately, by the time I got the car home, the dealership was closed, or I would have asked them. So, I thought I'd ask you guys!

I suspect that there is a problem with my car's steering lock, but if I am missing something, could someone please explain the process required?

Thanks,
Irene  ☺

Nothing special on the jazz.
Centre the steering wheel take out the key and with a wiggle the wheel, it should lock.

Ok, that's just as I suspected.

Looks like it will be going back to Arnold-Clark for a new steering lock then 🙄

Many thanks for the very quick reply.
Much appreciated.

Your welcome Irene
Let's hope that's the only problem with your Jazz.
Happy motoring.

Thanks, and yes, I hope so too!

I'll give them a ring tomorrow and see what they say.
Once it's been sorted out, I'll post an update here in case it might help someone else in the future 🙂

I had the same puzzle, when my brand new Mk2 arrived.  :(

After a couple of days, I found it locked correctly, almost 1/4 turn of the wheel, from the central position.

A little familiarisation, might save a red face, at the dealers......  ;)

Hi.

I did try turning the wheel from the straight ahead position (with the ignition key removed), by about 60° in either direction. I decided not to try turning it any further though, as that already seemed to be beyond what I would consider a reasonable amount of force, within which you would have expected the lock to engage.

However, if you mean that I should leave the wheel turned to approximately 90° before or aft of centre before switching the engine off, and THEN trying to engage the steering lock once the key has been removed....I can give that a try in the morning.

Thanks for the info.

If you park the cars front wheels on an old glossy magazine (one under each wheel) it makes turning the steering wheel easier and saves scuffing the tyres. You can then go from lock to lock in your efforts to see if the steering lock works.

I've just had a run, in the MK2. (Now, my son's car).

It locks at 45* left. 100* right. Approximately....

Hope this helps!

Tried this out this morning, and it worked a treat!

Turned it slightly more than the 1/4 turn, and the lock engaged immediately and without any further drama.

Thank you for the advice Dayjo
