Just came across this Forum while searching about automatic transmission problems. Just to register my thanks to those who have contributed to the forum and given me some ideas as to my problem. Bought second-hand from my ex in 2016, it had 73k on the clock. Maybe about 6 months later I noticed a judder as I pulled away. This disappeared at about the 5-10mph mark and then runs perfectly smoothly. The judder is much more pronounced on a slope and definitely when pulling my 5-foot trailer. Less noticeable when first cold but as soon as the engine/gearbox has warmed up the judder is fairly constant when you first pull away (up to about 10mph). My garage said just drive it steadily and I've probably done 20k with the problem but now feel I should get it repaired!

So, from the comments I've read, it looks like it's the starter clutch and/or needing a gearbox oil change.

I love this car as it sails along real smoothly, so I'm hoping the above repairs will do the trick. Any other comments would be appreciated.

Assuming that your car is an automatic, I thought that towing was not allowed.
Is it the CVT version or the i-shift?

Vic.

I think the CVT is okay towing Vic, but only 800Kg braked.

Less noticeable when first cold but as soon as the engine/gearbox has warmed up the judder is fairly constant when you first pull away (up to about 10mph).

If the problem is better or absent when stone cold, I would check the usual candidates, spark plugs (all eight) and EGR valve first, especially if the problem is accompanied by any stalling.

If your CVT fluid hasn't been changed in the last 25,000 miles, that needs doing anyway. Jerkiness is a known issue with old fluid.

Thanks for those comments. I'm due a service so will ask my local garage to look at the EGR valve (whatever that is!), cvt fluid and spark plugs.

Had a quote from one Luton specialist and they've quoted £1250+vat to do the starter clutch! So I'll see how the service goes first.

I would get the CVT fluid checked and probably changed. Honda used to recommend 4 years / 50k miles for the fluid change but recently reduced the interval to 2 years / 25k miles due to CVT judder caused by the accumulation of too much crud in the gearbox.

There's copious discussion about the CVT judder in this thread http://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=94.msg20148#msg20148.

It's worthwhile going through this older discussion about the CVT judder http://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=94.msg20148#msg20148. that link goes to the post about deliberately abusing the gearbox to help shift the accumulated crud before doing the second fluid change. A few years ago Honda halved the recommended CVT fluid change interval to 2 years / 25k miles and, while the service sheet indicates that this only is for MY2012 onwards, it would prudent to apply it to the older Jazzes.
