LV and Hybrid
« on: October 02, 2023, 01:54:25 PM »
Friend just tried to insure his hybrid Prius with LV and was told they don't insure hybrids.

His quote from his current company doubled so he was looking around. I suggested LV but they turned him down.

He's gone with some outfit called 1st Central and looking at Trustpilot, not a good move.

The usual story, 5* reviews for setup process but 1* if you need to contact them.

So are LV pulling the plug ?

Just double checked with him and it was the online system that refused his Prius

Got him to switch cars from Prius to latest Jazz hybrid and LV were happy to give a quote so LV don't like Prius

First I'd heard of a hybrid being tricky to insure. Mind, one risk profile with one underwriter is a very small sample.

This and EV insurance is definetly a developing news story as it were. It will be interesting to see where the insurance market is with them in 2-3 yrs time. Are insurers being overly cautious right now, or is this just the sign of things to come now more and more cars have battery power?

As someone mentioned on another thread, a convential fuel vehicle is more likely than ever to be involved with an EV third party liability claim with much higher costs.

Premiums are risiing fast and I expect they will continue to do so apace for some time.

He did some digging and the rumour is that his model of Prius has 2 expensive underfloor, easy to get at, cats that are frequently targetted

All EV repair costs are skyrocketting: sensors under bumpers break on crashes: long waiting times. ALso lack of skilled workforce to repair.

It'll be interesting to see if any significant changes happen to our hybrids

I spotted a Guardian article where a Tesla model Y owner got his insurance for £1200 last year but this year they want £5000.

The cats on early Toyota hybrids were in a position that made them vulnerable to theft.  Toyota became aware of this and the later models have an under try that makes the bottom of the car almost completely flat to aid aerodynamics and the cat has been moved next to the exhaust manifold at the back of the engine making it difficult to reach.

I'll be watching for Mk4 insurance renewal posts here

It seems that any vehicle with a HV battery could be in line for serious price hikes

With interest I follow this UK specific thread. I was able to fix my Dutch insurance for 36 months at 43€ a month. 12 months would be 41€, so better not take any chances for a mere 2€.
Maybe it is cheaper for some of you to emigrate and take the insurance there…

So, just renewed my MK4 insurance. Briefly; 4 mature, sensible no points drivers. Car on drive, North Man’cr.

Last year £220. This year £375, with a £20 loyalty phone call reduced from £395. Gone with LV again.

Doesn't sound bad at all for the year. That said, an increase of 70% from last year is a lot.

If you remember I have a friend who is a broker

He's been insuring a guy for over 20 years, no issues.

He had an accident earlier this year in his PHEV Ford Kuga, plus he turned 80 and this year they refused to quote.

My friend tried all the companies he uses and not one of them will quote

My renewal with LV from 2 October 2023 for my Mark 4 Jazz was an increase of only 9.7%. Surprisingly.
