Title: What age are you?
Post by: guest3469 on February 24, 2013, 09:16:22 AM
There are perceptions that UK Jazz owners are more mature than owners in other Countries such as the US and Far East.
On another US forum, 57% are 21-35 followed by 21% 45-60.

Honda has a far better reputation (if that were possible) outside Europe as a company that produces very well engineered, ultra-reliable cars that are great to drive and very practical.

Maybe it's the fact that the Brits in particular are very much badge snobs (why else would we be one of BMW's largest markets), and at the same time not very discerning when it comes to buying cars (just look at the number of French and Italian cars on our roads, bought for style, not substance).  Also European countries tend to be very parochial when it comes to buying cars (just play 'spot the foreign car' in either France or Germany).

The Japanese car companies have been very good for this country,  bringing lots of investment and jobs here - and lets face it without them we wouldn't have a car industry worth talking about ,  and we also produce many more cars (and export a lot more) than we ever did.

I think it might be something to do with the Rover connection, going back to when their was collaboration between the two manufacturers and they were producing very similar cars, in apperance at least!
I think the Jazz would have a bigger and younger following in the UK if it were a bit more sporty and had the bigger 1.5L engine that other markets get, along with sharper chassis dynamics.
Hopefully the up coming replacement model will address those issues ;D.

BTW, the Japanese aren't the only manufacturers producing cars in the UK and exporting them, TATA -Jaguar - Land Rover, BMW - MINI, GM - Vauxhall, not sure about Ford now, just engines?

Honda's market share has dropped from a high of 7th place in 1999 to 13th in South Africa.  They are considered "Japanese Mercedes Benz" and the prices reflect that.  If one discounts the cheaper cars (Polo, Yaris, Tata, Fiat, Chery, Chevrolet Spark, Hyundai i10) from the list, you will see that quality cars are the popular ones.  BMW 3 series is right on top, followed by Mercedes C class and then Honda.

Honda's cars are looking a bit dated now, compared with the stunning style of BMW and the larger Hyundais, the MB E and S class.  The Civic R is still a bit revolutionary and now looking not so futuristic as when it first appeared, its also a bit cramped inside.  There is a new Brio, introduced in December, but so far I have only seen one TV advert, whereas you see 10 BMW ads every day.

There is only one car plant that exports, that is BMW, and they employ 25000 people and it is not as automated as the plants in Germany

We visited the UK last week, driving from London to Cornwall and back again during our stay. As we arrived I joked that we should look out for Jazz-driving pensioners. First surprise was how few Jazz I spotted, especially in Cornwall where I would have thought their compact shape and practicality would have been a perfect fit. I certainly wished I was driving one rather than my fat and dull rental Focus, especially on the narrower roads.

Second surprise wasn't really a surprise for me but it amused the wife and kids - every Jazz we saw was piloted by persons apparently over the age of 60.  My Jazz has now been christened the "grandad car" :)

I may be in my 60's now, but with hindsight I would have stuck to Honda in the 1970's when i had one of the first Civics.
Unfortunately the prices rose as they became popular and I felt that I could no longer afford a Honda.
Wish I had saved harder because the Honda's really are superior to the majority of other affordable makes.
Sure am glad I now have my Jazz.

After 23 years of owning Vauxhalls, I progressed to my Jazz. The main reason I stayed with Vauxhalls is that they are heavily discounted to driving instructors. We can easily get 20% off the price just for being an instructor, you get a further £500 off for having previoulsy owned a Vauxhall, and there used to be a GM credit card which gave you a further £1000 off if you use it a fair bit.

One of my cars was an Astra Twin Top, rrp £22500, bought new for £16000. My last one was an Astra 1.7 CDTI which my son now has, rrp £16500, bought new for £10500. If only Honda gave instructor discounts like that !

BSM were GIVEN their cars by Vauxhall, and still BSM managed to lose £10m a year !

Are we talking physical or mental age. The latter I'm about 20   :D

Vauxhalls and Ford in particular seem to tie people in once they have bought one,  they make it financially hard to go to another make because of they seem to subsidise the trade in value if you buy another one of their vehicles.  I know someone who use to get Vauxhalls and had many problems with them,  but loved the fact that it was really pretty cheap to get a new plate Vauxhall on his driveway every couple of years.

Isn't the VW Polo made in SA and exported to Europe?

The Polo was exported, but local demand has seen to it that this stopped for a while as the factory needs to retool.  There was an article in a financial newspaper that VWSA has had more labour disputes than any other car plant and this affected their production.  The Polo has been the best selling car for 8 months in a row and you see dozens on the roads every day

the reason i think that older people buy jazz in the uk is because their decision is based not on looks but on careful consideration for reliability , practicality and the brand thing. in SA the common car amongst the younger generation is the vw velocity (dated design) and polo's which is "cool" to have. the younger gen don't have years of experience when it comes to owning and buying . cars , I would have bought my jazz a long time ago if i could afford it ( my first car was a ford escort mk 2 which cost me R 1000 back in 1992) , I was 18 then. I am 40 now. I read somewhere that one person said that the later jazz looks like some who just sucked on a lemon,  I might agree but looks don't matter to me ... the jazz came up tops in all aspects compared to the choice i had. Here in SA we see more females driving around in Jazz's so you won't see much guys with a moustache behind the wheel of a jazz and if you do , those are the clever ones.

Well I'm 64 and the Wife who's car it is is 63, she had a 2006 from new 1.4 CVT and she has just made me buy another a 2013, the price and add ons were painful but truthfully if its as reliable as the last one then maybe its worth it, maybe! The money I paid could I think have bought a nearly new and better car on terms of quality although the Jazz engines are superb

I am now 47 and practically i only drive my car with my kids in once a week. In summertime my kids have their own ideas and don't need such a big car. Portugal is a small country and also not big milage is need to trip wherever we go, so when i make my mind about a real reliable car a honda jazz was the first i though about. Yes, i am 47, maybe i have much more sense, if i was younger i could went to a fancy brand . Now it seems the more logical choice. :)

I'm 62 and I consider myself as a sportier style driver who has cat and mouse driving with other larger model cars at 70 on the motorway.  In 9 months that had a Jazz I've only once met one Jazz owner/driver to play with,  all the others have travelling well below 70 as in the case of a lot of drivers.  Most of which driving to be economical,  I'm very happy to get 38 mpg on my motorway driving.  My Jazz is a 1.2 stop start 2012 model which compared to the previous 1.2 Fabia is miles better in comfort and space inside and fuel efficient (33 mpg) with my driving style

Here in Hong Kong, I'd say over 70% of jazz owners (GE n GD) are under 35 and out of which almost 50% are under 30s. Well, given the proximity to Japan and China where we can get cheap mod parts, so Jazzes here are heavily modded.....

Me, 42, have a Golf MK6 GTI and One day me n gf drove passed Honda showroom decided to stop by to see if we should buy ourselves a cr-z as our second car...... But My gf loved the Jazz at the  first glance, and there you go. Got the GE6 cvt in dolphin grey!

13 months since we have it, love driving this little beauty around for both work and leisure. And the golf is now rarely used .... And even thinking to sell it for the new Jazz 1.5 RS.....  :P

It only seems to be in Britain and parts of Northern Europe that Jazz is seen as an old persons car,  in USA and Asia it is definitely seen as a choice of younger drivers and also young people with families due to lots of room inside and sheer versatility, with easy access,  doors which open wide and pretty big boot space.

Here some interesting information after visiting my dealer today with a poorly jazz, I was shocked how busy the new car sales where, i was there for 1hr and 45mins and I counted 7 couples sat in the customer waiting area for a rep to help place an order for a new honda and over heard a rep say, since starting here 7 years ago, 2015 has been the busiest year and the new models to come out will sure boost honda on the map again, sadly the age group was AOP and me been 21 I felt out of place! LMAO

Just bought a 2007 Auto (CVT) Honda Jazz 1.4 Sport in Black.
I am based in Cyprus and the car is UK sourced.
I've had it for 1 hour so far and love it - 46,000 miles.

I am a very youthful 56 year old and bought this car to fit all my kitesurfing and mountainbiking gear (I did say I was a youthful!).

I need mats (they were stolen in transit) and an arm rest - any recommendations that might export to Cyprus. Any other accessories that you recommend?

The age profile is funny... as the forum member at 59 I'm smack bang in the most popular age profile but the car was chosen and bough by my daughter who's 18 and apparently only a quarter as likely to have Jazz.

Mind you she is a neat, quiet & polite 18yr old who's very good with saving her money so perhaps she's already working towards the traditional Jazz profile.

Back in my home country, Hondas are always the preferred choice among youths. We don't get Jazz but instead get Honda City which is sort of like Jazz and it is quite popular among the younger crowd. We have three Cities(?) in the extended family. A third gen 1.5 VTEC (very rare as most were 1.3), a 3rd Gen facelift 1.3 VTEC EX and a 1.3 iDSI City (Aria).

me? im a 32 so I guess much younger than the average UK Jazz owners or am i ? Don't see a reason why though but yeah over in Yaris club everyone was much younger. I think a certain factor is cost of entry (used and new).

Well I come into the most popular age range, (the lower end of it though) I've had many cars in the past, (Astra, micra, princess, escorts and a couple of classic minis) Wanda is my 2nd Jazz and I love her, (apart from my minis of course, but that's a completely different story). I would definitely have another one ( Jazz not mini).

When holidaying in Bali last year every other car on the road was a Honda Fit and they were driven by all ages.

I'm mid 60's now and have driven Honda cars since the late 70's, except for brief excursions into Volvo (343) and BMW (3 Series 2.0 Coupe, a mid life thing I suppose) - which were both disasters.
I also owned a 3 door Accord in the early 80's in Canada. Having left it (plugged in, as you have to do in Canada in winter) in temperatures below -20C for 2 weeks it started on about 3rd attempt. Follow that for reliability!

Hi I'm Mike (72) from Cambridgeshire UK. Just purchased a used 2008 Honda Jazz 1.4 CVT SE today and looking forward to picking it up in 10 days time. From a Honda main dealer who I have know for decades,  1 previous owner and in fine condition with 64K on the clock.

One thing that confuses me a little, are all year 2008's CVT gearboxes. This one has the conventional auto gear lever PRNDSL all in line. Is it a conventional Torx converter auto box or a CVT box? Not too worried as it drives perfectly and has had it's auto oil changed at the main dealers. Someone mentioned that Honda call all their auto cars CVT?

Thanks,

Mike.

I have always thought maybe its the price of the Jazz that younger buyers dont buy? The problem is that older people buy for the reliability, the flexibility then its marked down as one for geriatrics which is unfair on Honda I guess

Just joined ClubJazz after buying a 2014 Jazz in Sweden this week. Primary residence in the U.S. and currently have a 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid and wife has a 2007 Fit. As noted in my intro, started buying Honda products in the late 80's. Have owned a 1991 Accord wagon, 1994 Accord Coupe, 2000 Insight Hybrid, and a 2005 Accord Hybrid.

Bought the Jazz because of the efficiency, flexibility, and assumed reliability of the vehicle. Not in a hurry to get anywhere, particularly during visits to Sweden. At the same time, don't want to be bothered with service appointments etc. Look forward to detailing my sight unseen new to me car next week. Should keep me out of trouble and busy for awhile. Also look forward to driving a five-speed again after many automatics over the years.

Will seek advice from this Forum if problems arise and update with any surprises.

regards

tim

Greeting ClubJazz.

I am 42, and have never been a boy racer or a car fanatic of any kind; it's a means to an end for me.

I bought a 2014 Jazz almost three weeks ago. I spent weeks looking for something significantly more economical than my 54 plate 1.6 Vauxhall Meriva without venturing in to diesel territory. I no longer needed the room or the ride height afforded by the Meriva. I found online reports for various cars to determine real world mpg, usually being disappointed by my findings. Eventually I made what appears to have been a sensible decision. And I've had some ribbing at work regarding the impending blue badge and disability conversion and so on  ::)

Interesting read! In Hong Kong where I was born, many Jazz have rear spoiler and body kit etc. I have put a rear Mugen roof spoiler myself two years ago , painted the brake caliper yellow and upgraded the steering to the leather one! When the current generation came out in 2015, I felt it was really boring and commented that to Honda UK. Luckily, the facelift version looks more younger, black alloys etc. Hopefully people in their 30's will buy it- it's a really good car.

But then again, I am not sure Honda UK wants to go that direction to upset their mature customers-after all, do they want to associated themselves with "boy racer"?

I brought the 2009 Salbert blue ES i-Shift in 2012 and I was 45! Would I have considered a Jazz in my 20's probably not. Probably due to cost.

I remember, back when I was a lad, the only people who could afford to buy, and more importantly insure, "hot" saloons, were old duffers as I am now.
Those were the days of the HA Viva SL.

Wow! Nice.

Mind you, in my 20's, I brought a new Honda Civic 4dr Bel-Air on finance!  We had a VW Jetta 1.3 E reg but after six years was really unreliable, coped with horrible service from VW dealers, enough was enough.

I saw the New Civic Coupe and was going for it but I lived at home at the time and my parents kept saying it's better to buy a 4 Dr with air con. So that's how I was introduced to Honda and we had that car for 17 yrs until I replaced it with my current Jazz!

I am 46, and drive a very quick Lotus.  I've had the pee ripped a few times because I drive a Jazz.  Little do they know eh lol.
The Jazz has it all, I love the drive.  Being a petrol head who likes fast cars, yes, more power would be beneficial, but its fine to be fair, as long as your willing to rev it. ;)

And if you add premium petrol like Shell V-Power, it does go quicker. PS. I don't have shares in Shell! Lol!

I am female 25, turning 26 and my 2013 Mk2 Honda Jazz is my first car. Bought a 2nd hand and low mileage.
I get teased a lot from my friends for having a grandma's car but I think I made the right investment. I did a lot of research and got a lot of advice from learned people telling me this is a solid and reliable car if I don't plan to be a racer girl wannabe.

Hi Babyjazz

You won't be disappointed with your Jazz. I run the same and 70,000 odd miles with no problems / failures.

Had it for over four years and never regretted it. Zoom off to S of France a couple of times a year, 35 miles a day for work or travelling up and down the country also for work upto 500 miles a day. Best car I've ever had.

Wait until your friends want to move house and you are going to help and turn grandma's car into an estate. ;)

That grandma/pa car is just something here in some European countries. In Asia and the US the Jazz (Fit) is very popular among young- people and families.

Some guy at work in his early 30s has a Mk2. He's from a Asian country originally though where clearly the Jazz has a different image.

i bought one a week or so before Christmas and am only 44 which is the youngest i know!

A couple of the guys i go to football with both have a jazz (mid 50's and 70+)and having sat in the back of them for longish trips with another guy and neither of us tiny was very impressed with the space and comfort in what seems to be a tiny car.

My wife has been unable to drive since an injury at work a few years ago  which has got a lot better now but other health issues make it difficult so i decided i should get a small auto to make it easier for her to get out.
After quite a lot of research i was shocked how much road tax was on some of the other small autos was so that, my previous passenger experience and the cam chain rather than belt and honda well known reliabilty put the jazz top of the list.
Even though there are absolutely loads about i reckon people keep hold of them as there were not many for sale( a good sign?) so after test driving one locally which confirmed it was the type of car i wanted but alarm bells rang about that particular car,i then went 70 miles next day to buy one.
2004 but only done 52k miles, ran perfect on test drive but on way home had a very occasional misfire which has got more regular over last month.Today i took front plugs out and gap was too big and could see wear on 3 of them,i closed up gap and now seems to be Perfect. I will buy 8 new ones and change the lot.
I was starting to wonder what i had done getting rid of my high mileage but ultra reliable piece of french junk!

Welcome. When I bought mine there were four of us on the test drive. Both my wife and brother, sitting in the back, said there was more rear seat room  than in the Volvo S40 I was replacing.

I don't think there's anything in the class with better rear legroom, not that I've been in anyway. I'm just over 6ft and fairly long legged, and there is ample legroom for me in the back.

Last small car we had was a Clio, and I thought rear space was okay for the size of the car, but the Jazz puts it to shame by a large margin.

40, going on 41!
First time Honda Jazz owner (63 plate).   :D

Previous car was a 2013 Vauxhall Meriva with the funny back to front rear doors (and the not so funny serious electrical power steering faults...)

Strangely I'm finding that the Jazz is actually more comfortable despite being a smaller car (I'm 6'2"). Loads of room beneath the steering wheel, and loads of legroom if I sit behind the driver seat with the driver seat set for me.  Everything just feels right to hand on the dashboard.   :)

I'm 36.

Picked up my first car at this age!  Formerly used the family car - a 99 model Carb suzuki. The 2004 CVT I've recently got seems like a huge upgrade. Lovin it for the space and practicality. Very easy to travel with my kid (and carry toys and Prams as well)

Happy to see that there's an active forum here. Lots of useful info. Keep it up guys!

Hi. I'm 66. eek!

This is my 3rd Honda. The first two were awful. An Accord coupe (USA built) from new. Continual warped front discs, to the point when I got Auto Express involved. They wrote letters to HUK, but they didn't care. Within 200 miles from new the front discs had warped so badly that the steering wheel wobbled from left to right without the brake pedal being depressed. Also a concerto 16v. Went like stink. The engine was Honda, but the rest was Rover. Steering rack was replaced within 1000 miles. Doors did not shut well. Lost a lot of money on both. Now I have a 2012 Swindon built Jazz, and it has been so reliable. I bought it from an Aunt who's husband had died, and had 5k on the clock. It was a bit dented up, and still is. I do any work on it myself. A great car.

When I drive on my own, our Jazz quite often has some old school metal or thrash on the go. The stereo copes surprisingly well with some Slayer or Motorhead  8)

One of my pet hates is people who assume that others want to hear their music - if you are turning heads it means people can hear it outside the car................ Always amazed how you can hear the phone from outside car as well,  several of us were filling up at a petrol station listening to every word of both sides of phone conversation from a car parked in parking space,  and the windows were closed !!

I’m 34 and recently swapped my previous car, a 2004 1ltr Yaris for a 2010 jazz si.

Had a seventh generation 1.6 Civic before that and that was a great car, only let me down once in 7 years due to starter motor going. I’m sure the jazz will live up to that and then some.

Now turned 84 and couldn’t resist the new Mk4 Jazz, so have recently brought a new EX e-HEV in Red again, all 5 of the cars have been Red.
I have to say, this is the best Jazz yet, very impressed with the EV performance and fuel consumption is much improved, compared to the the previous cars. Average over 3000miles is 68.9mpg.

I'm 67 and thinking back to my earlier cars like the VW Beetle and Austin Metro. I had spanners next to the driver's seat and was always adjusting the distributor and tappets and what have you to achieve smooth running and reduce pinking.

Now I just drive and let the little Jazz do whatever it likes, serenely going along taking no notice  :)

Some people have funny ideas about wider tyres being better, or maybe they were offered some cheap 195 tyres

I doubt very much if someone has changed the rims, the rim will probably be standard size 16" x 6 J - the rim is OK for a 195mm wide tyre, but you can also fit a 185mm tyre onto that rim, so could go back to standard 185/55R16 tyres.   Personally I prefer 15" wheels with 175/65R15 tyres, improves the ride, the steering, the road noise, it also protects the rim better from pothole damage and  also vastly improves the choice of tyres available, at 50 to 60% of the price of the oddball 185/55R16 tyres ( although they have become slightly less oddball ).

85, I’m afraid once you get over 80, insurance quotes go through the roof, A previous post said their cheapest quote was by Saga, No way!  they wanted £1692 from me, absolutely ridiculous!
Have just renewed with my existing insurer, NFU, for far less than half that.
Been driving the best part of 70 years, without an accident that was my fault, Jazz EX, garaged, 9000 miles per year, what more do they want?
