Title: Broadband/Phone ISP's
Post by: VicW on November 28, 2020, 02:32:22 PM
My contract with BT is about to end and I am thinking of moving to Plusnet where I can save about £20 a month. BT are not budging on their renewal price. Do any Club Jazz members have any experience of Plusnet.
No ISP's appear to get many good reviews.

Vic.

Plusnet is owned by BT so who's to say.
Having the same thoughts thou.
Why pay BTs silly prices, might just as well move to a cheaper supplier and then you don't feel quite so ripped off when it's not working as it should.

I have had Plusnet for several years.

Great service. UK call centres.

No issues.

And always seem to want to make a deal to keep you

Hi

We do not use plusnet but we are members of technical forum re broadband.

Plusnet have issues with billing for some and a poor rating for customer service. Of course not everyone would experience this and as with everything, knowledge and understanding of how dsl works is key

If your a gamer I may advise against plusnet but if just general user, then it’s as good as any dsl provider

Is fttp available in your area (full fibre) or is planned anytime soon

If it is, and you can run your current bt dsl past out of contract period (most can) then I would wait and get fttp. More reliable and stable.

Another alternative is 3 or 4g from mobile or data only. These prices are well within similar costs and sometimes cheaper but you have bigger latency

Or virgin, but again virgin has poor customer service and can at peak times, see slow downs on their docis3 network

Many thanks

John

I've used them for about 6 or 7 years. You probably know that they are a subsidiary of BT. I switched from BT on grounds of cost and had a few problems to start with and nearly regretted it. However, they have redeemed themselves so far as I am concerned and I have no reason to move again as things stand.
They have remained good value and, where they can be, are helpful. It can take a while to get through to their help- line and their online written "chat" is often out of use.
At lot of my contacts are on gmail and there seems to be an unsolvable problem with email between Plusnet and gmail.
To get round this I opened a gmail account (free) and rarely use Plusnet's email system now.
When I've looked around Plusnet always seem to come out highly, if not top, for customer service in surveys.
If I were starting again I would certainly go with them.

+1 for Plusnet. Been very reliable for the last 5 years. Good prices, good customer service and always up for a haggle come renewal !  :D We have 3 mobile phone contracts with them too, which are also great value at the "Mates Rates" deals they offer.

Used Plusnet for years and years. Excellent value overall.

Be prepared to wait 20 minutes or so for customer service. You will very rarely need to call them and they are very well worth the wait once you get through.

Their technical support I have always found to be beyond excellent.

No ISP's appear to get many good reviews.

The problem is that you hear all the bad stories, but rarely the good ones - and the bigger the ISP, the more bad stories there are.

I'm surprised BT won't do some sort of deal at the end of contract, they usually come back with something competitive in the end, but I know quite a few happy Plusnet customers and i don't think they are half as bad as some make out. Most of the complaints seem to revolve around customer services, but you can get around that by registering on the community forum, who seem to be more on the ball. Taking the reward cards and cashback you can get for switching into account, they work out very competitive indeed.

Oddly enough I just moved back to BT after 20 years elsewhere - not the absolute cheapest, even with the £125 cashback and reward card taken into account, but the kids make a lot of use of the included BT-Wifi hotspots when they're out and about.

One of the things which bumps up the BT charges is the calls - I think it's now a ludicrous £15 extra pm for unlimited anytime calls. You can get unlimited calls and texts on a mobile contract for £5pm or less, including from BT themselves, so you may as well use that... which I do.

By way of comparison with BT's call charges, I think Sky are currently doing phone, fibre broadband and included calls for £25pm  all in.

There are a few smaller ISPs out there which have excellent reputations for customer service, such as Zen, Uno, Andrews & Arnold, etc.,  but their monthly charges are much higher than the volume providers.

Good point. I also like the fact that the call centres are UK based. So much easier to deal with IMHO. I was with Talk Talk for years, and their call centres are global and that can be difficult, especialy if you ever need to follow up on a problem.

Agreed. We have 3 unlimited minutes and texts mobile contracts for the price of landline unlimited minutes. Our landline is never used. IIRC Plusnet also have a sizeable connection charge in addition to the PPM for the landline call.

I'm with Plusnet. Been with them years, since O2 sold out to Sky and I jumped.Never had an issue.

What I do like is that they have a user forum, like here, with lots of helpful members, but best of all it's also frequented by staff. Post an issue or for some help and it's sorted.

The above posts about poor customer service I find hard to believe. They frequently come top in user polls.

Hi Vic
I've been with PlusNet for the last two years after being with BT. Can't fault them at all, same speeds, no billing issues and when I did have a problem with my connection they sent out an engineer quickly and he resolved the issue at the junction box. What I like about PlusNet is the fixed cost over the contract - no increases during contract unlike most of the others (BT!).

Good point, and something to watch out for. BT have upped their annual price increases to CPI+3.9%, I just escaped this as it changed after I migrated.

Unfortunately, EE and Plusnet have done exactly the same. Obviously this does not apply to those on existing fixed price deals, but new Plusnet contracts from October this year are subject to the annual price increases.

My old legacy contract has risen a few times. Only by about  £1 a month. This rise has been fair in my book as it's not happened often.

If you refer a friend then you can get 75p a month off your bill for each one, I'm saving £1.50 with 2 referrals.

In the interest of balance I had some shockingly bad service from PlusNet. I'm relieved to find I've completely forgotten what it was about. Just that there were many annoying hours on the phone getting nowhere. I suppose the nature of the beast certain problems or certain people just end up in a mess.

I always find money savings expert's website a good place to start.

Gave up with BT when my contract ended , made a move to Plusnet 2 years ago never had an issue.
Worth looking around for 18mth deals inc cash back.
Also switched over to Plusnet last year for all mobile again with cash back.

It is definitely a case of you pays your money and takes your choice, there are as many bad reports about BT as there are about Plusnet.
As has been said people are very ready to complain but not to praise.
It's decision time I guess.
Thanks for all the replies, folks.

If you do sign up with them.

Watch the first 10 days.

The warehouse sometimes forgets to send the router.

It happened to me when I first signed up. And a couple of years later when I went to fibre.

Luckily I could use my phone. Or laptop at golf club.

I use mobile broadband as I do not know how long I will be living here. I have a contract with 3, and until recently it was limited to 40Gb per month, enough for the internet but not much else.
The had a "Binge"  function whereby if you signed up with Netflix, Spotify and various other subscription services, then the data they downloaded did not count against my 40 Gb. I used Netflix for my TV content.
A few weeks back, I was passing the 3 store and popped in to see about updating to more data.
I ended up with Unlimited data for less than I was paying for my 40 Gb. I was given two options. A data sim, for £21 per month or a voice sim for £20 per month with the first six months with the voice sim at half price. They both offer the same speed so no need to guess what one I plumped for. The benefit of the voice sim is I can use it in a phone if the need should ever arise, though I cannot envisage circumstances in which I would need to.
