Knock from rear end.
« on: April 07, 2021, 10:15:46 AM »
As if I have not had enough problems this past couple of weeks, I now have a knock from the rear end. Thinking it might be the Dynamic Bush or the rubber associated. Items 2 and 10.

If it is, I hope it is item 10 as item 2 is about eight times the price.
I'll have to get my son-in-law to check it out for me. Mind you, on my experience of trying to trace knocks; it could equally be a drop-link.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Go underneath with a long steel bar -  and try to move everything with a rubber joint.

That should isolate the problem area. (And if it's only on one side, the other will be on its way out as well.
I would start with sway/anti roll bars..

From the back end? Does it sound like it's vaguely from the back end, or does it sound like it's "in the boot"?

My guesses, something loose in the spare wheel well, exhaust, shocker, shocker top bush, torsion bar damper rubber fallen out.

Yeah - check easy things first, things loose in the boot / wheel well - loose jack, wheelbrace etc.  Even a loose spare wheel.

Exhaust rubber allowing exhaust pipe to knock on something.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

My wife came back home in the Jazz the other day and said there was a loud knocking noise from the back of the car........my golf clubs were in the boot.

First thing I checked was the boot. Nothing loose or untoward. As for getting underneath with a bar, those days are long gone.

I thought you would have checked the obvious, but worth a mention.

I think my 'laying under cars in the freezing cold' days are over too. Next place I move to, I'll be investing in a workshop with a vehicle lift (and heating) again - chap whose workshop I used to borrow occasionally has now downsized, so that avenue is now closed  :(

Accelerating away from a junction this afternoon, above the sound of the Prince Philip eulogies on the radio, there came a low frequency booming sound from the rear which got louder. This caused me some concern.

This got a bit louder for a few seconds, then there appeared abeam on the starboard side... a Chinook helicopter which boomed away into the distance.  :)

Well. my son-in-law came along this evening and checked over the rear end of the car. Everything is in order. What he did find was that one of the new brake pipes, fitted for its MOT in December, was rattling against the underside of the body. One of the clips was missing. He tied it securely with a nest of tywraps. I've to try it and let him know how it goes. Price was right too. £0.00.
