Rain Sensor
« on: December 01, 2024, 02:48:57 PM »
Hi All. Thanks for accepting me on the forum. I have a 2019 Jazz and the intermittent wipers don't work. My local Honda dealer here in Dibden Purlieu tell me the radar is broken and quoted almost £2000 to repair?

Is the radar somehow linked to the rain sensing function? How can it possibly be £2000- that seems insane?! :(

Thoughts appreciated.

I fear your dealer is talking utter hogwash. First, the MK3 Jazz doesn't have any radar; the various driver assistance aids use either cameras or laser sensors. Secondly, the auto wiper sensor is an infra-red system. Perhaps the £2k cost arises because he wants to replace the entire sensor pod, but that seems like overkill. Especially if the fault lies (say) in the switch or elsewhere in the system rather than the sensor. I'd suggest finding a good auto-electrician to see if he can identify the fault.

And another thought, just to rule out the blindingly obvious. I assume you do have the stalk in the intermittent wipe position? That's one click down from "off" and one click up from "on all the time at low speed"? If so, do you have the ring on the stalk adjusted to an appropriate speed? If that's set too low the wipe interval might be so long as to seem like it's not working.

Didn't think it had rain sensor.
Mine just has intermittent wiper speeds. Which you twist the stick and it sets different intervals if you do the one up as explained above it just stops when you stop at traffic lights etc.

Thanks everyone for your replies.  Much appreciated.  Yes - it is rain-sensing auto-wipers and I have definitely played with the various settings.  The garage agreed it was not working,  but as Colin says - I think they are perhaps 'mistaken'.   I have called Honda in Leatherhead and they agreed that the rain sensor is not linked ot the radar, so hopefully a fix of less than £2000 will be possible! :)

I have kept the brochure from when I bought my car in 2015, and according to that all trim levels have "rain sensitive auto wipers". I doubt they would have removed that for later cars, so if yours aren't working then you also might have a fault.

Edit: just noticed your profile says you have a GD1 Jazz, which (I think) is a Mk1. If so, I'm not surprised you don't have rain-sensitive wipers!

I just haven't updated my profile  ;D
I have a 2019 jazz now.

I had a look today, it does indeed say auto but then it has a little arrow to where you adjust the interval between wiping. So I just assumed it's based on that.

When I turn mine all the way to the 'fastest' that's when it slows and stops/starts on its own. I just assumed it was based on speed of the car. As it has very specific speeds whe it starts /stops.

Basically if over about 10-15mph it activates full wipers, and below 5mph it activates intermittent 4seconds.

Then again mine could be broke too.?

I did find a little video on YouTube.

Think I will have a look at mine now.

If you need it they are about £20-£40 on ebay

Hmmm I checked and I definitely have one. It's quite easy to get to too if you feel like a DIY job.

Just to be clear, the ring control does not directly adjust the time interval of wiping. It adjusts the sensitivity of the system. So, with the same setting, the wipers may only sweep occasionally in very light misting conditions, or almost continuously in heavier rain. And if it’s not actually raining, then the wipers won’t sweep at all no matter what control settings you’re using. Personally, I find I need to adjust it for whatever the conditions are.

When I turn mine all the way to the 'fastest' that's when it slows and stops/starts on its own.
As above, it’s not “fastest” but “most sensitive”. TBH, if the wiping speed is varying irregularly then that sounds like the system is functioning properly because it is reacting to the conditions.

:) I think I have sorted mine. I took it apart and cleaned everything up. It certainly seems more raindrop based now. Where as before the timing didn't change before wipes.

Sorry OP for a bit of spamming on your post. There is also a gel pad on the windscreen which may be dirty/old. They are about £12.

Follow the YouTube video, the first plastic clip easily pops off, the second bigger shroud needs pulled away more to the side but again it pops off quite easily. It's definitely worth cleaning and unplugging/plugging back in to save yourself loads.
