I think Honda found McLaren hard to work with, it looked as though they did not allow enough space in chassis to accommodate the engine Honda had designed and problems stemmed from that maybe with cooling a problem as well.

In previous seasons when with Honda, McClaren blamed the Honda engine for their lack of performance.
The latest Honda engine seems a lot better with Torro Rosso while McClaren are still floundering with their new Renault engine which is doing very well with Red Bull.
So perhaps the problem wasn't all with the Honda engine after all, maybe the car isn't itself isn't too good.

I don't think Maclaren were the easiest partner to deal with, Japanese put a lot of effort into partnerships and if Maclaren wanted to be 'the big boss' all the time that would not work.  I had read that Honda wanted changes made to chassis but Maclaren would not do it.

Gasly praises Honda's engine as he came home in Canada in 11th after starting way back in 19th, as Red Bull mull over possible switch from Renault to Honda:

Hartley taken to hospital after a crash but given the all clear.
