Chancellor Announces Scrapping Incentive
« on: April 25, 2009, 03:07:58 PM »
As part of the 2009 Budget, the Chancellor Alistair Darling has announced a plan to offer motorists of older cars a financial incentive for scrapping their car and replacing it with a brand new one. Small, green cars like the Jazz with prices starting from under £10,000 are set to be the key beneficiaries. And with production of the Jazz due to start here in the UK later this year, the UK economy would directly benefit.

Motorists who trade-in a car of at least 10 years old for scrap will get a discount off a brand new car of up to £2000, with half coming from the government and the other half from the motor industry. A similar scheme is operated in Germany where car sales increased by 40%.

The scheme starts next month (May) and will run until March 2010. To qualify, your car must have been registered on or before the 31st July 1999 (up to T reg) and you must have been the registered keeper for at least 12 months.

It appears Honda has resolved its differences over the scheme and is now participating after all.

That's all very well if people can get the finance or have £5k+ stashed away. Unless they buy a Perodua (sp?).

Anyone here buying/bought a new Jazz under this scheme? What did you trade-in?

And for any dealers here, what's the most unusual trade-in you've taken under the scrapage scheme? Can anyone beat trading-in a Bond Bug for a new Kia?  :o

From Honda UK Media Resource:

Quote
Scrappage Scheme summary
The most popular car under the Scrappage Scheme has been Jazz, which has proven to be hugely successful in attracting new customers to the Honda brand.  Hailed for its reliability, practicality and frugality, over 6,600 units of the British-built and much-loved supermini have been sold via the Scrappage Scheme so far; and 86 per cent of these customers are conquests.

Civic sales have also been boosted by the Scrappage Scheme. Over 2,000 Civics have been ordered, with 80 per cent of customers new to Honda.

We’ve also seen some interesting – and peculiar – exchanges of cars, including a Jaguar Sovereign for an Insight hybrid, and a Porsche 944 for a Jazz.

Other peculiar scraps
Land Rover Defender - S2000
BMW 730 - Jazz 1.4 ES
Lexus LS400 - Insight
Alfa Romeo GTV - CR-V EX
Range Rover - Insight
Vauxhall Cavalier - S2000
Ford Fiesta - S2000
Honda CRX - Civic Hybrid
Peugeot 106 - Accord Type S saloon

Tragic losing a CRX to a Civic Hybrid!  :(

Hi Richard,

I purchased a 1.4 EX Manual under the scrappage scheme, in July 2009. I traded in a 1993 Renaul Clio 1.2 Prima with 32,000 genuine miles on the clock. The car was in immaculate condition having lived most of its life in a garage! However, due to it's age, it was worth virtually nothing so was delighted to receive the £2,000 from the scrappage scheme.

This is my first Honda, and we are pleased with the vehicle. The only disappointment is with the holding of the hand brake. The old Clio had rear drums and used to hold the car without problem on our quite steeply sloping driveway. The Honda discs cannot hold the vehicle at all on this surface, even pulling the leaver to its absolute maximum extent. If I park on the driveway I have to leave the car in gear and put a large building block under the front wheel for security.

Other than that, a very pleasant little vehicle to own.

 ;D ;D ;D
My other car is a 2015 Range Rover Sport....
No, seriously, it is!!!

Tip: Release handbrake fully, then push down hard on brake pedal whilst applying handbrake. You should find the handbrake then engages more tightly.
