Photo driving licence Renewal
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:20:55 PM »
Did you all know it's been over ten years since the DVLA introduced the photocard licence? And do you know that the photo has to be renewed every ten years? :o

Read here

It turns out not many people are aware the photo has to be updated every ten years, although the DVLA do send a reminder pack a couple of months before. However, it will cost you £17.50!

Mine's not due until 2010.

 ;D

That should read 2010...I got my full licence in 2000.

Not my best photo so I'm not complaining.

By the way, if you move house then the DVLA don't charge for updating the address on the licence. Don't understand why then they have to charge for updating the photo, but not for changing your name or address. Shouldnt complain though - I'm sure the govenment would charge for that if they could get away with it!

I didn't realise too these new photo license have 10 year life span until I read it here.  Mine expires in 2011.

Looking on the bright side.  At least it is cheaper than a colour TV license !

If you move house, get married or change your name, you will need to purchase a photo licence.

The photocard was handy when I was in my early 20's for getting in to pubs!

If you have a photo license and you move house, I know there is no cost to replace your existing photo license (unless they've changed the rules recently?).  They re-use your photo which they already have on file.

It should be no surpirse that they have a 10 year life. After all, they are linked to the Passport Agency and passports last only 10 years.

When I applied for mine, I did it all online. My signature and photo came from the Passport Agency. There was nothing to 'sign' for the DVLA!

Yes, that's still true. We moved 18 months ago and all I had to do was pop the card and paper counterpart in the post and only paid for postage.

I got mine upgraded back in '99 when I bought my first pad.

Remember that you need to present both the card and paper counterpart when asked to by police. For other ID-only purposes, the photocard I think is sufficent.
