noise
« on: August 13, 2019, 08:13:11 PM »
I have an old and battered mk 1 Jazz. For several months there has been a fairly loud clunking or banging noise coming from under the car when I drive on rough roads. It drives and handles perfectly, the tyre wear is even, I have crawled underneath it and can find nothing loose, removed the wheels and checked evrything it sight and a few things I cant see, Last night I drove over speed humps at 25 mph, no noise, no problems, as soon as I hit an uneven road surface its back again. No noise on a smooth road surface, but the  much patched road I live on makes it sound like someone is underneath hitting it with a mallet. Does anyone have any ideas ? ( aside from buying another car )

Anti-roll bar drop link most likely candidate, if it's banging on gentle undulations. The tiniest bit of play in the joint, usually the lower one, and the banging soon sounds horrible.

Less likely, and if it's that noisy, wishbone bush or anti-roll bar inner bushes.

Agree, I had the same bumps and bangs. Picked up a pair of drop links on eBay for £17 but had to get them fitted as the nuts were stuck (10 years road dirt) and I don't have the tools. Now rides a dream, well worth it.

Or is it? What do you think?

I changed drop links to ebay ones a few months back. Very happy, as motor factors are about double that price.

If you are doing them yourself be prepared to grind off the nuts, or have a set of mole grips to keep the joint steady so you can undo the nut. Can be a right pig to get off.
