4th Gen MPG Issue, Please Help!
« on: December 29, 2022, 10:59:25 AM »
I bought myself a used 2020 Honda Jazz Hybrid a month or so ago from honda as an approved used. It only had 26k miles & at the time the computer said its efficiency was 65mpg, since Ive had it, its mpg has dropped to 58.3 & is still decreasing. On motorway im often in cruise control & when off motorway im almost always in B mode driving sensibly. Boots nearly always empty & theres only 1 or 2 passengers, I cant get my head round why my cars only getting 58mpg, I appreciate it is winter but its only an average of 7 degreese so dont think that explains why my mpg is below 60. With my driving id expect around 65.

58 I would say could be normal as you will be using more electrical systems than summer, as you've said.

From other posts here the average is :

70mph = 50mpg
60mph = 60mpg
50mph = 70mpg
<50mph can rise to 80 - 100mpg+
Let's be careful out there !

My Consumption over 16000 miles has been 66.7mpg
However over the last 210 miles it has dropped to 59.8mpg
My driving style has not altered, so I can only assume its down to the cold conditions.
Doubtless it will return to normal, as the weather warms up.

... Yeah I wouldn't worry about it only being 58mpg at the moment.

If I recall correctly - Which got an average of about 56 mpg in mixed driving. As you can see from my avatar I'm at about 56 mpg and this reflects a full years driving. I did get 4 consecutive tanks of over 60 mpg before my latest tank which dipped sharply.

I have been down as low as just over 48 mpg. This was last winter but, again, not too bothered. The petrol engine was on a lot (as it is now) as it it is needed to heat the car. Put that together with urban, short stop/start type motoring and the figure seems not too bad. My lowest mpg in my MK3 was down at around 34 mpg in the depth of winter.

The Mk4 is about 25% more efficient than the MK3 so I'll settle for that. You will see a big increase in mpg when the weather improves.

Cold weather driving really hits mpg. I have only experience with my Mk1 Jazz but this time of the year economy goes out the window. Cold tyres, cold and often wet roads, everything conspires to reduce mpg. Enjoy your new car and stop worrying about it. It is not as if you are only getting 40 or the like.

Our average over 16 months is 61.9 mpg. But... during the last 2 months (partly real winter here) we have only made short urban trips. Result of the last fill-up after 310 miles? Consumption... 50.62 mpg
Am I surprised? No.

All cars suffer a drop in MPG during the winter months, but for some reason hybrids of all makes take a bigger hit. Although overall they still have better consumption than pure ICE cars.

mpg improves when temperature setting is on Lo as the engine runs less but the interior of the car gets cold then. In cold weather I sometimes set the temperature on Lo when at traffic lights or stopped for a longer period but then keep the temperature setting at 18C when moving this helps improve mpg in cold weather.

You say it’s not a Winter car, but you have to agree the Mpg is still much better than any previous Jazz, 🤠

Try winter tires, eventually studded.

During the summer I was getting just over 60mpg despite having to come up hills to get to our house. On some longer runs I got high 90’s which was amazing.Milder weather It dropped to high 50’s and now in winter weather it’s high 40’s. Went to local recycling centre this morning,downhill nearly all the way 65mpg. Coming back same route uphill it was high 30’s. Still much better than the 1ltr Arona I had before which averaged mid 30’s around town.
I have been surprised how sensitive the EV mode is to the heater control in winter though as I can literally turn it on and off by switching the heater off.

Tthe heater is powered from the engine so it needs to run for far longer than summer so a significant mpg hit is expected.

If you prefer a higher mpg then it's full stage 3 winter clobber and turn the heater off.
Let's be careful out there !
