Ridiculous cost of replacement wheel trims
« on: May 12, 2022, 03:32:14 PM »
Today i asked a Honda dealer what would be the cost for a replacement 5 spoke plastic wheel trim that are on the EX model jazz expecting them to be about £25 to £35   imagine my surprise when he informed me the cost was £158, That is a ridiculous amount for a bit of Silver plastic , they can easily get scuffed with the kerb and should be a better price, you can get a whole Alloy wheel refurbished for about £80.

Was the £158 for all four? Or just for one?

Unlike some cars that have plastic trims over alloys, the ones on the Jazz don't protect you from kerb scratches unfortunately. I had a loan car once that had a big gouge out of the alloy part of the wheel.

To change them you have to take the wheel off as well I believe, as the trim fixes behind the wheel nuts.

I think I have seen them on e bay for under £100.  Original and undamaged, but possibly used.   I have just checked on ebay, but couldnt find one at the moment.

If you can find the honda part number  (may be on the back) try googling this for best prices.

But even £100 is ridiculous. Some brand new alloys cost less.       If yours is kerbed  but not too badly damaged it may be worth getting quotes from small body shops (or wheel refurbishment specialists)  to repair it with flexible body filler  (as used on plastic bumpers ) and resprayed silver.  It may be the first time they have been asked  to do a 'plastic hub cap'   but can probably do it  .
If you do buy a new replacement dont let them keep the old one.  I have also seen slightly damaged ones on e bay for quite a lot of money.

Found someone selling 3 at £75 each - but that might be the alloy, or the trim, and they could either be 15 or 16 inch, it's not clear from the ad!

Or you can buy a whole Jazz 16" used wheel with a tyre on it for not much more (I'm not sure if previous generation wheels fit though.)

I wonder if the 'free' tyre & alloy insurance my dealer threw into my deal for my EX would cover the trims?

The 8G Civic has 4 bolts that hold the centre console in place.

There are 4 tiny (thumbnail size) plastic covers that click in to cover the bolts.

They are £8 each !

Some Honda pricing is illogical.

I think thats the same listing I saw a few weeks ago.  Not sure why I didnt find it this time.  Collection in person from Skegness may be putting buyers off.    ;)    From zooming in on a  photo  it looks like they are 16"

I think there was a post about this insurance about  6 months ago.  IIRC the terms and conditions were a bit vague about whether plastic trim was included.  I dont think they were , but worth checking again  if you have this insurance .

I think the limit per claim is £150 for tyres/alloy repair, up to a maximum of 10 claims (£1500) during the policy life.

That's crazy money for a plastic wheel trim. I'd be tempted to replace with some cheaper aftermarket ones, and safely store the originals given the price of them.

Those plastic things are very vulnerable to kerbing.

My cunning plan was to buy a set of 15" Rial Milano alloys wheels and all season tyres  ,for the colder months, and use  the originals only in the warmer months.   Mainly because I often need winter legal tyres, and it also reduces exposure to potential kerbing damage.

Mytyres currently offer  15" Rial Milano alloys, with  top quality all season tyres  ready fitted and balanced, for £170 each  on michelin Crossclimate, or £148 on Vredestein quatrac

https://www.mytyres.co.uk/cw/bundle?vehicle_ids=1255511986792305252&wheelId=KRA--MI60545A22-5--R-442723--9MP006&wheelIdWithTpms=&season=gan&rimType=alloy

16" are available but the packages are significantly more expensive with less choice of tyres.   15"can give a better ride,  and the higher tyre  side wall makes the alloys less vunerable to kerbing damage.

They come from germany, so took about 3 weeks to arrive  (The P & O ferries fiasco was causing delays at the time  -it may be quicker now)    I have fitted them to ensure they fit,  but currently  back onto the originals for the summer.

£680 is a big initial  outlay , but I may never need to buy any more tyres for the car, and get to keep the milano alloys when the car is sold.   :-*       And I'm not driving on summer  tyres with ice  hockey puck grip levels  in the winter.

If despite these precautions I do damage a plastic trim  I will probably repair and respray it  myself, but may need to spray both caps on that side to ensure a colour match.
I noticed that 'windmill'' hub caps are an aero design which may give better  aerodynamics but  they are not 'sided'  .They are less effective on one side than the other.

Wait for middle aisle bargain in German discount stores around £25 for 4.

Eh?  Do you mean universal plastic hubcaps?   They wont fit the MK4 wheels.
