Those plastic things are very vulnerable to kerbing.
My cunning plan was to buy a set of 15" Rial Milano alloys wheels and all season tyres ,for the colder months, and use the originals only in the warmer months. Mainly because I often need winter legal tyres, and it also reduces exposure to potential kerbing damage.
Mytyres currently offer 15" Rial Milano alloys, with top quality all season tyres ready fitted and balanced, for £170 each on michelin Crossclimate, or £148 on Vredestein quatrac

They come from germany, so took about 3 weeks to arrive (The P & O ferries fiasco was causing delays at the time -it may be quicker now) I have fitted them to ensure they fit, but currently back onto the originals for the summer.
£680 is a big initial outlay , but I may never need to buy any more tyres for the car, and get to keep the milano alloys when the car is sold.
And I'm not driving on summer tyres with ice hockey puck grip levels in the winter.
If despite these precautions I do damage a plastic trim I will probably repair and respray it myself, but may need to spray both caps on that side to ensure a colour match.
I noticed that 'windmill'' hub caps are an aero design which may give better aerodynamics but they are not 'sided' .They are less effective on one side than the other.
