Heat pumps yet another top down idea promoted by lobbyists who can feed vacant minds at Downing Street. Ignore these fantasy they will evaporate.

I haven't got the room for one of these :

You're also going to need a hot water tank and bigger radiators inside and it's not going to be effective unless your house is well insulated in the first place.
Never mind. Just think of all the new jobs that will be created.

I've got a warm air system, no radiators.

Fortunately I should be moving within the next 3 years so the heating will be on my watch list.

My daughter is all electric with storage heaters. She's got the latest Dimplex Quantum jobs which are more expensive to run than gas but nowhere near her old circa 1983 storage heaters when she moved in.
Let's be careful out there !

Just don't rely on windpower:  at present it is hardly working. (not that the wind advocates will tell you that as they think it works all the time)

The heat pump raises the circulating radiator water temperature to only 45 Deg C, far below the temperature of the water heated by a gas boiler,  those radiators will have to double in size for the heat pump

I think they can work but they are eye wateringly expensive to purchase and the point about the radiators having to be twice as big is well made. A friend of a friend has a heat pump but he spent north of £40,000 on his house getting the insulation to a state of the art condition, heat exchangers to minimise losses through ventilation and the pump itself. His energy bills dropped like a stone but even he admits he won't live long enough to break even.

There are some encouraging comments here ...

... especially in the FAQs regarding installation costs, insulation and radiator requirements. Admittedly this is from a supplier trying to drum up business so a healthy-size pinch of salt is needed, but the general impression is that there are some clever brains working on the problems (both real and perceived).

My daughter and partner have been living in a newly built house in the Netherlands for 6 months now. Heating only with heat pump and underfloor heating. Electricity: a (large) roof full of solar panels. They are completely "environmentally neutral"
And... perfectly warm all winter!
So it works perfectly in new-build houses. In existing houses it will be a very different, more difficult story...
If nothing goes right, go left!

This still doesn't solve the problem of where to put them for a lot of small houses. Terraced will be almost impossible.

Let's be careful out there !

I know that, you know that, but this Gov is determined to outlaw gas boilers completely.

It will be as successful in that as in reducing immigration.

Most self-contained terraced houses have an outside space that can be used (mine does). The real problem will be flats and apartments without easy outside access, or modern houses built with instant hot water boilers so don’t have room for a hot water tank.
