Title: Should I swap
Post by: chrisv on August 12, 2020, 08:38:10 PM
hi,
I have a 2011 jazz cat with around 65,000 on the clock, I like the car and don't  really want to change it but as it isn't  allowed to tow it causes me problems when we go camping. I have always liked the crv, preferably the older ones with diesel automatic but I'm  totally undecided  what to do, I know the old car isn't worth a lot but I can get a decent crv for around £6,000 or less. Comments and advice please,
Chris

What do you mean not allowed to tow? As far as I know 2011 Jazz is allowed to tow 1000 kg trailer with brakes and 450 kg without brakes.

The cvt is not allowed to tow legally, confirmed by honda UK, don't  know why,

The following info suggests that towing with a CVT is fine:-

I can see Mk1 and Mk3 CVT there but for Mk2, like the OP has, only iShift models are shown. I'm not sure why that should be, perhaps heat dissipation, but it seems like the dilemma is genuine. And tricky. I'm surprised how attached I am to my Jazz. I suppose it makes a difference how often you go camping. If it was only one or two weeks a year might it be feasible to hire something bigger to tow your stuff?

Is it something to do with the engine braking of a CVT ? I know conventional auto and CVT do not have same engine braking as manual boxes and on heavier cars auto boxes are hard on the brakes as you have to use them a lot more.

I suspect the fluid will overheat...

My Gen 2 CVT owners manual states the CVT model can be used for towing, it is just rated at slightly lower weight than the other models.

So too does the manual for my Mk 1.

Check the VIN plate.

There will be 3 or 4 weights in Kg stamped on it. The first weight is the MAM, or maximum allowable mass of the car itself. The second weight is the gross train weight. The difference between the two is the maximum braked towing capacity. The last two are maximum axle loads.

If the second number is missing, or is the same as the first, then the car is not homologated to tow, and you cannot legally tow a trailer.

Those number are all that the authorities are interested in if you are pulled.
