Title: Auto Gearbox jumping - 2006 1.4
Post by: flyingguy on January 07, 2022, 10:32:47 AM
Hi all,
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Wife has a 2006 1.4 auto, only 57k on the clock and had it for a few years without any issues. Recently we noticed that when accelerating (occasionally) the gear seems to jump too quickly, makes the car jolt which wakes you up! Only seems to happen around 15-25mph and just when picking up speed. If I drive the car in 7 speed mode it goes through the gears perfectly. Tried it in manual too under load and no issues, so just seems to be when using the normal automatic driving mode. I've read that they recommend gearbox oil change every 50k, but also read that you have to use a very specific oil and don't want to take it to any garage that might cock it up. Also, if it needs to go to an auto specialist I'd rather let them do, equally we don't want to spend a lot of money on it.
Any thoughts?

New gearbox oil should solve this, easy job I’m not technical but can do it. Just go on U tube.

Thanks, does the oil need changing or it actually starts to run out? i.e. it'll be near empty?

Drain the oil and replace, it’s essential that you replace the exact amount that came out, there is no dipstick with these CVT gearboxes. They need the exact amount of oil to work properly. There is a procedure to go through to get as much oil out as possible, see U tube.  It’s not as straightforward as an engine oil change.   Don’t be put off by this, it really isn’t difficult.

CVT oil should be changed every 25K or 2 years, whichever comes first.

I looked on youtube and a guy did the oil change via a dipstick in the engine pay? Sucked out the old oil and added it in, would that not be recommended?

Actually just found another video showing the right way to do it, looks easy enough! They all seem to say however much you drain out is the amount to add back in, how do you know it had enough or the right level to begin with? Sorry for the stupid question!

The gearbox has a dipstick in the left front corner of the engine bay. There is a drain plug and a refill plug accessible from under the car. Use only Honda CVTF oil and nothing else. It is available from Honda dealers or online from Cox's or Lings. You will need two lots of oil so that that you can do a flush and oil change, that should cure the quite common juddering problem.

Vic.

The correct procedure for the replacement CVT-F is 2 flushes and a final fill, for which you will need 2 x 4 litres of genuine Honda CVT-F.

As Jocko says drain & refill every 24 months or 25k miles.

Thanks all, however having read about the juddering this doesn't seem to be like what is described?

It's also started making a whining noise in reverse, a bit like the noise you get from cars when the steering is on full lock and you're turning slowly. Think that might be connected and solved by the oil?

Assume the oil is 5Ls, if I have to fill/drain twice then refill, it takes about 3.2 litres is that right?

The fluid is in 4 litre containers. Do you know when the fluid was last changed?

I'm not sure to be honest, it was bought 2nd hand and can't see any evidence that it was done. So if the containers are 4L's and it's being recommended to do 2 flushes and a fill, I'm going to need 3 containers right? Seems an expensive waste of oil!

No, you will only need 2 containers as not all the fluid will be drained, hence the flushing procedure. If it has never been changed then I am not surprised you are having problems, 90% sure this is your problem.

Thanks, no way of knowing sadly. Car runs perfectly apart from this. Any idea why it would work without hitch in the 7 speed mode and manual but not in auto?

Technically I don't know but mine was the same and flush/ fill worked and I added Xado EX120 additive for a 'belt and braces' approach.

If you've never heard of Xado, do a web search and you will find many user recommendations.

Does anyone know from memory how long a tube you need for the funnel to fill the oil? Had a look online for funnels with longer tubes but not sure if they are long enough.

Did you change the fluid and has it cured the problem?
