Oil Consumption??
« on: January 13, 2018, 03:21:57 PM »
Does anyone's Jazz use oil?
I know I am about to put a jinx on it, but so far I have never added any oil between services, am I just lucky or doesn't anyone's Jazz burn or lose oil?

Since my last service I have regularly been adding sips of oik, but I think it is down to being not filled to the mark, not that it is using any.
Why I say that is after 5 months topping up it has now stabilised. The problem was we were not wanting to overfill it. I would check it, then add some, then it would be a week or so before I checked it again. Now that it is properly up to the mark it is always there.

Not a drop, @Ozzie!
Oil is changed twice a year (about 4000/5000 km) and genuine oil filter once a year. This because we drive more shorter than longer trips with the Jazz.

Never.  Although I have once had to add coolant when the contents of the 'overflow' bottle probably evaporated while parked over a baking hot fortnight.  On my return it sounded a bit like sloshing a 3/4 full bottle behind the heater, needed between 0.5 & 1 litre to get it back to normal.  My assumption is the heater matrix is starved before the engine when levels are low.

This is my fourth Honda and I haven't had to add any oil to any of them.

Never had to top up any of our Honda cars between oil changes despite them all (except current jazz and civic) doing over 100,000 miles - my first Civic (1996) did about 190,000 without any work on engine other than cambelt replacement, no work at all on gearbox or wheel bearings. Rear brake shoes replaced at just over 100k, exhaust lasted 140k.  In fact it never once let me down and only consumable parts like brake disc and pads, spark plugs, battery - still had original clutch and alternator and starter motor when I traded it in.

Had my mk1 for about seven years and no topping up.
Mk3 for just over 2 years no topping up same with my old civic, all oil tight.

55,000 miles, just checked it this morning still where it was at last service. In over 3 yrs never seen the level move. It stays where it was at change every year ( I only do about 6,000 miles a year)
I do not mollycoddle the engine, if I want to go then it is to go!!! So obviously Honda have it right.
Gone are the good old days when  a BMC A series engine was acceptable to BMC at 250miles to the pint. A cat wouldn't last long in those days.

The story goes, that the early mini got 76 miles to the pint, and the large door pockets were designed to take the round oil cans of the day!

Jocko Your right about the door pockets/oil - when I sold on Mini's from the local auction all new owners all got a tin of Duckhams .

Duckhams? A blast from the past - can you still buy it?

The only thing I remember about Duckhams is that it was bright green and after a few miles in the engine it went proper  dark green and thin as water - I was not impressed only ever used it once.  When Mobil 1 synthetic became available in late 70's early 1980's I started using that and can remember  how easily my engine used to crank over in winter.   I have used almost exclusively Castrol oils for last 30 years and my cars have all done high mileage with no problems and no oil usage between changes.

I do remember when my brother tried BP visco-static in his motorbike in late 1960's (latest and greatest oil apparently) and his engine seized up miles from home,  needless to say he never used it again.
