Buying S/H Jazz
« on: January 17, 2019, 08:43:34 PM »
My local garage recommmended a Jazz and I'm keen, having had a bigger old Honda a few years ago which I loved.
However, I've been really put off by the gearbox problems and spark/engine problems that I've now read about elsewhere. I can only afford a higher mileage car, around  90,000 miles, on my budget. Any advice? Even having a vehicle inspection surely can't predict problems.

I have a 2006 model which has done 110K miles, I have done 23K miles in the two and a half years I have had it. I had to get the gearbox bearings replaced at a cost of £324. Work was carried out by a gearbox specialist. Other than that the car has been pretty well flawless. The mpg figure beside my avatar is what I have achieved over that mileage.
It is only Mk 1 gearboxes that give a problem and not all at that.

90k miles is only just getting started, my Jazz Hybrid went to 256k miles in 6.5 years, and had a hard life as a driving school car.

I think a minimum requirement would be a full service history, not necessarily a main dealer history. I am also a bit ocd about tyres, if the car has a good brand of tyres, I think its a good sign that its been looked after, if the tyres are a non-premium brand, where else has the owner saved money? Maybe that's just me?

I've a 2003 on nearly 80,000 miles that I've had 13 years, without doubt the most reliable and least problematic car I've ever owned (by quite a margin). I've also got a 1 year old jazz that has been faultless, so far...
As cars go you'd be hard pressed to find anything more reliable, all models of cars have common faults, somehow most Japanese manufacturers manage to have less than most and Honda is one of the best in this respect. I'd be more concerned buying German.

Honda Jazz are fine town cars, a few will be poorly maintain with a risk history  -HPI Experian check wil sort those.
Buying s/h vehicles its all about condition Check the MOT history on the govt website
Read any service receipts not merely the stamped book, look around the car do the tyres match , are they a known make, is the interior dirty damaged worn around the drivers seat/door jam.
How does the car drive, talk to the prev owner, if it doubt walk away
There are 100's of good jazz out there

I would be more worried about buying something which has very low mileage for the age (eg less than 2,000 miles per year) as it might be a vehicle only used for short trips to the local shop and the engine never getting a chance to properly warm up.
