Title: How to tell a 1.3L engine from a 1.5L engine?
Post by: vigorousjazzhands on February 25, 2021, 12:07:10 PM
G'day guys!
This might seem like a really dumb question, but how do I tell which engine my car has? The badge on the back of my car says "VTI-S" which, from my searches, seems to denote the 1.5L models in Australia. However the VTI-S seems to also come with alloy wheels, cruise control and leather steering wheel, among other things.
My insurance policy also lists the car as a 1.3L engine (after searching by registration). The govt registration papers do not seem to list engine capacity for some reason, just says '4cyl'. I assume this all just means that a previous owner has stuck a "VTI-S" badge on the back for some reason...

I've looked over the engine and can't seem to find anywhere that it says 1.3 or 1.5.
When test driving, this one felt slightly punchier than the others I had test driven, but maybe that was because I was getting used to the engine, etc... (my previous car was a twin-charged 1.4L engine, so the Jazz feels very different!)

Would love any insight you might be able to offer as to how to tell them apart!

Welcome. You could search the VIN, which will tell you the model of the vehicle.

Thanks mate, I did try this, but the VIN check just said “4cyl”, no engine capacity...

Engine wise, I don't think there's a lot of physical difference externally, if any!

However the VTI-S seems to also come with alloy wheels, cruise control and leather steering wheel, among other things.

Does yours have any of those things?

Any chance that the tailgate has been replaced with a used one from a VTI-S?

I thought the 1.3 had indirect injection and the 1.5 had direct injection ...... I'll look out a previous post with some info.

Not on a 2010 mk2.

Engine number provides the first hand information, and it can be found here:

L13 is 1.3 litre and L15 is 1.5 litre.

Of course, that is the correct answer :)

My engine details are on the data plate on the front bar under the bonnet.

Disregard the marked section. That is for the paint code.

I have a recollection, that the data plate for Australian markets differs from European ones and there is much less information in that plate. Original poster may confirm if that's the case or not.

Could well be the case. Here in the UK, the VIN gives engine capacity on interrogation.

This is what I was wondering - my car doesn’t have allows, cruise control, etc. The VIN-check says my car hasn’t been written off, but I guess it’s still possible that the tailgate was replaced...
