Oil! For someone very pedantic about Maintenance.

Hi all. I own a 2007 1.4 i-DSi Manual with 64500 miles on the clock. I'm going to give it a Major service next month and I need oil. Genuine Honda Type 2 is 0w-20 but this seems a bit thin... I've used coxmotorparts.com for a few bits and bobs so far, and their service kits and "approved oils" are all 0w-20 as well.

As my engine is low mileage but 16 years old, what should I use? I'm pedantic about maintenance and want to use decent stuff. Already got a genuine filter, NGK plugs, etc lined up.

So, Genuine Honda 0w-20 or something like Castrol 5w-30? Note - I bought it last year just after it had been serviced, and I don't know what's in it currently.

5 w 30 castrol is fine I have used it all the time  having had 26 years in engineering as a machine tool fitter with one of the biggest garage equipment manufactures you cant beat it  as it says its liquid engineering dont worry about the thickness for your honda over thinner oils mines a 2010 i shift 50,thou on clock engine sounds like a singer sewing machine!!!

As above: I use a variety of 3w30 oils - depends on price - since out of Honda sevicing. Now at 57k miles: runs perfectly, burns zero oil.

The manual supplied with the car says 0W-20 or 5W-30. I used the latter. I used SHELL Helix Ultra Professional AG 5W30 Fully Synthetic as I bought 10L at a discount price after one of the contributors here alerted us to a Euro Car Parts offer. I continued to use it, though the next time I bought it it was more than double the price.

+1 for 5w30. Again, whatever is on offer at the time. Last two purchases have been Castrol 5w30 A5 spec via a Ford dealers ebay store, £6 per litre delivered to the door. Bargain.

Always replace the oil filter either the blue honda or try Blue Print somewhere on line was selling 4 pack quite a bargain.
I use 5w30 in older models without any issue. The craze for 0-20 down to reaching fuel efficiency targets, regular oil changes better than thin oils in an engine for prolong mileages.

In April this year I bought 2x Blue print oil filter ADH22114 from CarPartsInMotion ebay store for £8.60. Bargain. Do check they fit the mk1 Jazz before you buy, but it gives an idea.

Using Fuelly and comparing the results of 5 years using 0w-20 oil and 5 years of 5w-30, my average deteriorated by 0.5mpg . Given the wide range of travel over that time, conditions etc.. I would say miniscule.

I never went down the way but I tried 10W-40 and that made no difference to my mpg.
