EGR valve Clean or Replace
« on: November 25, 2021, 01:17:11 AM »
2006 Honda Jazz 1.4 manual has a misfire/judder whilst accelerating.  I will be checking the plugs and perhaps cleaning the EGR this weekend.

I have read much on the forum about cleaning the EGR valve and note the gasket and cleaner required with a likely cost of around £20.

I have read much less about replacing the EGR valve for around £40 (https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/egr-valve-intake-manifold-10651/honda/jazz/jazz-ii-gd/16317-1-3)

Am I missing something here, is this EGR valve at £40 rubbish or is cleaning the EGR a surefire way of fixing the problem

thanks

The first thing about the misfire is to change all EIGHT sparkplugs. Many owners and unfortunately mechanics do not realise there are a set of plugs along the rear of the engine. As a result, they do not get changed leading to all sorts of problems.
Regarding the ERG valve, I too am thinking of cleaning mine. The price of an OEM valve makes me suspect the advisability of a £40 valve.
Has your MIL illuminated (yellow light that looks like an engine) and if so have you checked what code/s were generated?

Its my sons car, when I drove it last night the EM light did not come on but it did when he drove it the day before.  He has not had the codes read; by the time we pay a garage to read them we could have bought plugs etc.

I do not believe the plugs have been changed for at least 3 years so will start looking there (all 8).

The price difference between an OEM EGR and those linked is stark but it will not need to last another 15 years, 3-4 would be fine.

It's worth getting a basic OBD reader, they are very cheap these days. For general stuff they will read any straightforward fault, only when it gets into manufacturer specific systems do you need something more capable.
£10 or so will get something basic. You can read logged faults, decide what to do, fix things, erase faults and try again etc. See if the codes return. The worst that can happen is you waste the price of the OBD reader.
Do some quick searching and look at youtube videos to see how easy it can be.

Worth trying to clean egr once you have checked the plugs etc.
Polish place on ebay selling gaskets, I bought 2 for the same postage costs. Under £10 I think. Egr cleaner a fiver?

If my EGR valve was broken, I would happily buy a cheap one to replace it, but as it isn't, I plan to clean it.
My MOT is due in the next month so after that, I may not be doing either.

Be careful what error code you get. Many people got error P0401 and purchased new EGR unit thinking it helps solving this problem but new unit did not help and they've got the same code coming up after installing a new unit. The problem was that  egr passages in intake manifold were clogged and it needed to be cleared... So it depends on code you get... Buy cheap scan tool and you see what problem you are dealing with.

Honda had a lot of warranty claims which required a new (better) EGR valve, the problem was not confined just to the Jazz, the Insight too.  The issue with the EGR being the position sensor within the EGR , the position sensor  is an electrical  potentiometer of about 5000 ohms,  the position may be anywhere between fully closed or fully open as a %,  The car ECU commands a % opening of the EGR  and reads the potentiometer signal  to see if position  is achieved, the defective EGRs potentiometer developed a dead spot for position  and the ECU "stalls waiting for the position signal. Hence the hesitancy.
i know of one DIY engineer who stripped the EGR and installed a new potentiometer purchased from RS components, but the work is beyond most people.  From Ebay you can buy pattern EGrs for around £50,  are they any good?

Most makes of cars have problems with EGR,  the car makers will buy the EGR from a specialist maker ( like they do with alternators, ECU, aircon compressor etc. )
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Sparkplugs replaced and problem gone.  The old plugs were worn with gaps around 2mm, the previous owner must have not changed them.  EGR valve left in place.  Thanks all for help

Great news, try a look see at the cabin filter behind the glove box. Often missed at service, once replaced your Jazz will be a new car, Blue Print are a good OE replacement.
