No dashboard lights and wont start.
« on: December 31, 2022, 09:54:40 PM »
Hi All

Happy New Year

Im at a loss here, so hopefully, you experts can help me out, please.

Im trying to help out a friend here; she was driving along with no issues, then all of a sudden car just died engine stopped, and no lights at all on the dashboard.
If I turn the key to either the first or second position lights on the dash, and try to start the car, it will turn over but won't start.

I have gone through...
The wiring all looks ok,
Battery tests 100%,
Fuses
Relays (apart can't find the starting relay)
Indicators will flash on the dashboard
Headlights work but not showing on the dash that they are on.

After many hours I have found that the previous owner has put A 20amp fuse on the ACC circuit F/3-7.5A, which should have been a 7.5amp fuse, the 20amp fuse has heat marks on the pins, so Im suspecting it's blown the ECU. I traced the wire from the ACC circuit to the plug on the ECU and it has 12v showing when I turn the key so that shows the cable is ok.

I have plugged in an ODB scanner and get nothing back, wont even connect.

Any other ideas or have I missed anything else I could check to confirm.

Thx

Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Disconnect battery clear the ECU leave for 20 mins, ask if they have a spare key. Put battery on charge or swop over with another.
Attempt to start
In these cases you often get to know what changed & when from asking the owner a series of questions - these days I decline involvement when I'm the 3 or 4 source of help
Good luck without a reading on your scanner your not at 1st base

Cheers, I will try the reset ECU first.

Would a  failed ECU cause the dash lights, not to some on though?

Also, thanks for the diagram, will have a look through to see if I'm missing anything else.
