Jazz service costs
« on: December 10, 2009, 09:01:17 AM »
I have a new Jazz 1.2 bought in Feb 2009 and am very pleased with it overall. This replaced another 1.2 Jazz.

The older Jazz required servicing every 12500 miles which equated to every 10 months or so.

The new Jazz has 'variable' service intervals set by the car computer and it required me to service at 7000 in July! To make matters worse it is now insisting I service again at 12000!! The last service cost £250 so am expecting something similar.

The logbook states a 9500 service interval as a guide.

The new Jazz has doubled my servicing costs - has anyone else found this?? I am strongly considering a private garage.

'Variable service intervals' looks like just another way for dealers to get extra money out of car owners.

It is a fact that low mileage / short journeys are actually harder on a car than longer journeys and the computer probably takes this into account because most of the engine wear takes place in the first couple of 'cold' miles and the oil has to absorb proportionally more combustion products (acid and water), but surely with modern synthetic oils this isn't as bad as it used to be.

If you intend to keep the car for a while and aren't so worried about warranties and stamps in your service book then do your own servicing - most services are only an oil and filter change anyway, which will cost you about £30 for good oil, and no more than £30 for both oil and air filter, + an hour of your time.  That cup of coffee and service stamp are costing you the best part of £200 (dealers charge at least £60 hour for labour).  A 'full service history' costs you dearly, and is only going to increase trade-in or sale price on  car less than 5 years old, after that prices flatten out.  Just keep your receipts for oil and parts to show future buyers.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

If this info help you, I changed oil at 5000 kms with my GE Jazz 1,4 (first service I guess), now I have 17500 kms and car computer is counting down kms to service. At the moment the computer says 5500 kms more to go but it drops a little faster than I'm getting mileage.

Gary this means you have no expenses for 5 years? If so  ;D No option by my Honda dealer  :'(

You also have 8 months/8000 miles to decide. That's what I'm doing and will buy in the New Year! :)

When we bought our Jazz last September the dealer told us there have been some issues with the variable servcing calling for service too early and Honda have been paying for the services.  I would talk to Honda customer services if I where you.

And £250 is far too much for what is little more than an oil change.  Call a couple of dealers for prices and try to negotiate the price down with your own dealer.

I have 26k miles on my 09 Jazz now. Its required a AB service at 9k, another AB service at 18k, and recently a service 2 (pollen filter) at £25k. I understand only the Jazz GE and latest Accords have this variable servicing out of the Honda range. I bought the £550 service package when I bought the car; the dealers have confirmed that ALL variable servicing and costs are included within the time/mileage limit. Its not like old school poor value servicing package when you get a set total of minor/majors then it ends. I'd suggest when buying a new Jazz, you consider this as a good investment of correct servicing on a technically complicated car by competant Honda specialists. I wouldn't trust a Haynes manual on it!!!

I was offered the "fixed price servicing" for arround £550 from Honda, when I contacted them about it they stated it was for labor only. Honda only allocate 0.3 of an hour for a 12500 service! I decided it wasn't that cheap after all.

With main dealers now charging anything up to £75+VAT per hour for labour the costs soon mount up. Mind you, a lot of the jobs can't be done in the time allocated by the managers or manufacturers so the costs mount up even more!!!!!  Just remember the nice comfy seat and the cup of coffee you had from the machine while waiting for your car - and the quick cleaning of the car,  these things don't come cheap.

0.3 hour (18 minutes) may not seem much time for a 12,500 mile service but it is only a quick check of brakes and lights and oil and filter change (you get a new filter if you are lucky, as my mechanic mate says, it's down to the mechanic who inspects the filter if it gets replaced or not, OK for an air or pollen filter, but how the hell do you 'inspect' an oil filter?).

http://www.honda.co.uk/cars/owners/partsandservicing/fixedpriceservicing/

says that everything is covered, parts and labour. Even if the job takes longer than the 0.3 hours allocated, it should be covered according to the  details on that webpage?

Who told you that?  As already mentioned, the price includes all parts as well as labour.

I don't know what the labour time is but 0.3 hrs is ridiculous - our Mitsubishi Colt is going for a basic service this week plus coolant change and the time (2 dealers told me) is 1.8hrs.  Dealer "list" price for the whole job is £180 but I got it with MOT and a year extention of the Mitsubishi breakdown cover for £200.

I just had a look through the paperwork I received when I purchased the fixed price, 5 year service plan when I bought the car. It covers parts and labour for the servicing. If parts other than the service consumables are required (brake pads for example) they have to be paid for, but at a 20% discount to the normal retail price. I sincerely believe this is £550.00 of anyone's money well spent. Especially for those as mechanically inept as me!

I'm getting my GE 1st service next Saturday as that was the next available appointment.

Only just done 6,910 miles in the last 362 days and since I've already paid for the 5 year servicing plan- I shouldnt have to pay anything extra come Saturday.

Will report back when its done.
