Front brake caliper replacement
« on: January 26, 2021, 03:04:29 PM »
My 57 Jazz CVT has been used even less since first lockdown.  Passed MoT end of October.  Today, after returning from a 6 mile round journey, I could smell burning.  Cut long story short, the front offside caliper piston is seized after removing caliper - I can't wind it back.

One daft question, is should I replace BOTH front calipers at same time?  Factory calipers are made by Nissin I think.  Replacement will be Pagid or whatever.  Original Honda brake pads after <17k miles after 13 yrs.   I did inspect and lubricate the pads and guide pins last summer.

I know the JIS disc screws are difficult to remove.  But how difficult is to to remove the caliper carrier to hub bolts without air tools?  There's quite a lot of rust on brake parts after 13 years.   Undecided whether to attempt DIY, weather permitting; or take it to a garage.

You don't need to remove the hub bolts to change the caliper, only the much smaller slider bolts. Can't remember the exact sizes, but a couple of small spanners is all you need. Guessing here, but 12 & 15mm rings a bell, something around that.

I have only ever faulty calipers singly. No reason to change both unless as I found on ours, the other side was nearly as bad.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago with the near side front being the problem. There was no problem changing just one caliper, the braking system worked as normal, although subsequently I decided to have the remaining three changed, thinking after 15 years they wouldn’t be far behind.

My local independent charged me £70 for replacing 1 front & 2 rear calipers, no way at my age was I going to go out in the wet & cold to save that!

Silly me, I thought the carrier bracket had to be replaced too.

So I could just replace the caliper(s) and bleed the brakes for now, and keep existing old pads?

Looks like brake hose is bolted to caliper, and I presume easy to undo and refit to new caliper.

The outer facing side of the disc has a lot of surface corrosion in one quadrant (not visible in attached photo) - probably from washing wheels last week.  It 'might' clean up after I replace the caliper.   Otherwise, I was thinking to change the discs and pads which I am dreading to do for reasons given above.

I presume parts were extra?
Did you buy your own calipers for the indy to fit?

I just looked on Eurocarparts.  A Pagid caliper is £57 + £29 surcharge.

I presume if I DIY, can I get away with just bleeding the one brake where I had just replaced the caliper?

Yes, I supplied my own parts for the 3 preventative replacements,  would have been at gunpoint otherwise!

For the stuck one, the garage supplied the caliper because it was a bit of an emergency.

I found a brand new Honda front with carrier on eBay for £75 and the 2 rears were third party from eBay at £80 the pair.

Yes, that’s what the garage did with mine.

I just had a quick look on eBay, I can't see anyone selling genuine Honda brake caliper & carrier sets at the moment.

Pagid calipers sold by ECP don't include carriers.  Looks like it is best quick fix option if I wish to attempt DIY.

Then deal with may be DIY changing the discs, pads and perhaps remaining calipers, when weather is better later this year.

Thank you for yours, and SparkyPaul's advice.

Mine was a one-off old stock, normally £500!

Most calipers come without carriers, not necessary.

Thanks for ebay link.  Mintex?

Looking at ECP/Carparts4less.   I didn't realise they are selling 'remanufactured' units sourced from Pagid.  It's about £57 Plus £29 surcharge.  The surcharge is refundable (credit note?) if I was to return the old part to them within 7 days and it is accepted for refurbishing.

Pagid & Mintex are same group.

Mintex Brakebook website doesn't list any calipers.
But Pagid Brakebook website does.

Were the pair of 3rd party rear calipers you bought for your car, remanufactured Nissin units?

Don't think so, from Advantage Autos. Don't think there is much diffrerence between any of them TBH.

I found the eBay listings by 'advantageautopartsltd'.  £33.99 with free next day delivery for a new 3rd party front caliper.
