Mk 1, E5 or E10 please advise me.
« on: September 01, 2021, 08:04:30 PM »
Would using the alternative to E10 which is E5 alleviate the possible risks such as moisture in the fuel and associated corrosion?
Would E5 give better performance?

Thanks

I don't expect to notice any difference.

You're worrying too much. Use whichever you want, it'll run fine on both and you won't notice one or two percent difference in power or economy either way.
Water and corrosion? Not a real world problem if it's in regular use and the fuel comes from a reasonably busy station.

Agreed. Not a worry unless you're going to store the car away for the duration of the winter.

My father told me to never let the petrol tank go below half in the winter to prevent any moisture forming. As this was many many years back and the quality of fuel and storage tanks have improved, I doubt condensation is a problem.
But I still keep it more than half filled in the winter.

Just remember 99% of the population who don't take note of these things will just continue filling their tanks with the default 95RON (now E10) fuel they always have. They will go about their business unaware anything has changed. There's nothing to worry about, your car will run perfectly fine. Only very old cars, before the days of fuel injected engines (much older than our Mk1 Jazz -which is essentially still a modern car) will need to take note. Those driving cars old enough to be affected will be car enthusiasts of some sort and will likely be aware if they need to do anything.

Don't drink and drive, then.

I have several old motorbikes and only ever use Esso Supreme. It is the ony super unleaded that still contains NO ethanol in most of the UK . I leave it in over winter and have never had any problems with gummed up carbs.
From their website:
Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99 contains zero ethanol, except (for logistics reasons) sites supplied from Scotland, North Wales, North England and Cornwall.

I can buy that juice locally but when I'm away from home I have to fill with what I can get.
I wonder how long it will be available.

noticed during the current nightmare of panic buying.. we got out early i decided to go in to our local ESSO station .. 2 reasons  although ive used morrisons supermarket fuel since ive had my jazz we was coming back from skegness a couple of weeks back . popped into a murco garage to refill.. well the differance was felt straight away.. plus we drove all the way back to shrewsbury and done 2 weeks local running around and was left with half a tank.. anyway i noticed the fuel price had been hiked up by 3p also there was less people queuing as it is a more expensive fuel.. but yes the E5 is the most expensive as they stated it was the super grade. so refilled her with E10 cost £30 to fill from just a tad less than half a tank.. we popped in to morrisons to get some food items . must of been about 50 bloody cars queuing .idiots!. but ive always noticed branded fuels are better than supermarket grades.. when i had my old Subaru forester it was like it had been serviced after filling up at say a SHELL garage plus whent like a scolded cat lol.

I just heard someone say that the current fuel debacle has been orchestrated to stop us moaning about E10 petrol.
