Picked up a new double din in the black friday sales. Took about 30 mins to change it all over and quite pleased with the results.

Well that's your insurance invalidated.

And an insurer would want a full safety check and engineer's report in my view.

Looks great, did you have to do much CanBus learning to detect the steering wheel controls or did it pick them up easily?

Well these days, even putting a sticker on your window will count as 'modifying' your car - you ever get the feeling Insurers are desperate to weasel out of anything ?

That looks like a major modification including warning lights - some of which will be safety related.

Any major modification of warning lights - eg ABS, brakes, engine warning lights  or a major revision to the vehicle's wiring (which this is)- can affect the operation of other systems as they are (I assume ) CANBUS . So any wiring fault might affect for example door locking, or ABS or Traction Control or rear lights.

IF I were an Insurance Assessor and saw that dash after an accident, I would immediately say it was a modification to the car and ask for the Engineering Test Certificate #  which shows it has been tested. If there was none, I would claim that it Breaks the insurance T&Cs which are that ALL modifications have to be notified to insurers.(A standard phrase).

# By a suitably qualified Engineer with letters after his name and at least a day's work charged out at a lot per hour.

I am deadly serious...

No its not.
Insurance company was notified and because its not a performance related modification theres nothing to pay and im covered to the value of £500 for all i.c.e.
No engineers report or inspection is needed.

The airbag light was unscrewed from the old head unit fascia and moved to the bottom of the new fascia, no extension cable was needed.

Canbus was fine with steering controls working as normal through a connects2 magic box thing.

Fairly sure there was a 'T' version with Sat Nav that used the double DIN fascia, so it's out there.

My last insurer didnt care that i changed the head unit and put wind deflectors on when i phoned them to declare what i had done.
They did how ever put the price up when i put on an aftermarket set of alloys which cost all of £5 more a year.

Went over my car with a fine tooth comb last week and needed lower control arms, discs and pads all round, rear shocks were leaking and track rod end boots are cracking.

Spark plug change was pretty straight forward

Lower control arms were the easiest arms i have ever changed.
Rear shocks are straight forward, only word of wisdom is you have to to unscrew a screw that sits inside the clip where the parcel shelf sits when its in the upper position then the cover pulls away and you have access to the top mount.

Will be doing the track rod ends later in the week when i get booked in for tracking.
Quite a pricey week really.
