Honda Jazz EX USB adapter
« on: June 25, 2011, 11:11:22 PM »
hi.
Just bought a used Jazz EX (new shape) and according to the manual an USB adapter is required to plug a mp3 player to the audio system.

Does anyone know where I can purchase this adapter , as the USD port on the car is non standard.

I have found the part on the Honda site, but they want £260  :o

http://www.honda.co.uk/cars/jazz/accessories#accessories/audioandelectronics

Is there any replica cheap versions available that are suitable?

cheers

My Jazz hybrid came with the adaptor (in a bag in the glove box). I would expect that your EX originally came with one. Did you check all the stowage places in the car? It's a short cable with plug on one end and USB socket at the other end. I can't see the cable on ebay but maybe vehicle dismantlers may have one from an insurance write-off.

Why Honda didn't just provide a standard USB socket is one of those mysteries. I'm not sure how easy it would be to access the back of the socket and make your own connections (2 x USB signal, +5V and ground).

Hi John
Thanks for your reply.
Will have another look in the rear stowage compartments.

Totally agree with your comment; guess it is a money making ploy from Honda to make people part with with £260 for a cable that costs 50p to make in China!
regards

The supplied adaptor lead is about 200mm long with a standard USB socket one end and the special plug to suit the Honda socket on the other end.
If we could identify the special plug, then it would be easy to make up a similar lead using half of a standard USB extension lead, with the special plug soldered on.

My lead has a plug, roughly similar to a USB plug but with a retaining latch and with the following letters embossed on it, PTB, JAE, PC.
It could therefore, possibly be some form of computer plug.
Can anyone help to identify it?

Could not find any picture on the internet about it, could you post some?

mod: I`ve found one here from Honda, for £61.80, http://www.roweshondaparts.co.uk/product/JAZZ_IPOD_ADAPTER_%28JAZZ_2009-ON%29_08B41TF0600A.

Hi DV
I don't think the item you describe is the correct one for the job. That one looks as though it is for an I-player.
The attached photo shows my lead. (if Iv'e pressed the right key and things go according to plan!!)
The plug on the left is the special plug to suit the Honda socket.
The plug on the right is a standard USB socket.

Certainly not worth £61

I`ve never seen such a plug on any PC computer. I think this is called as a TAK-connector for Honda, http://www.applegate.co.uk/electronics/honda-connectors-0009856.htm, scroll down to Automotive.

mod: Checked again, this is not TAK connector either, http://honda-connectors.co.jp/product/index.php?m=partNoSearch&ser_id=TAK&lang_cd=2.

mod2: Continued to search I found it is a JAE 4-pin connector MX19 series, http://jae-connector.com/en/general_en.cfm?l_code=EN&series_code=MX19.
Can be ordered from here as a 4 pin socket housing (MX19004S51 -black or MX19004S52 -grey): http://uk.mouser.com/search/refine.aspx?Ntk=P_MarCom&Ntt=111764688&utm_source=supplier&utm_medium=featured+spotlight&utm_campaign=111764688.

Not totally convinced.
Attached are 3 more closeup photos of the 'special' plug.
Certainly the JAE make is correct as it is marked on the plug

They say, "If all else fails, read the instructions, or in this case go to your Honda dealer".
Judging by previous posts, there appears to be some confusion here.
A good friend of mine recently purchased a 12 month old EX model from a general car dealer and it arrived without the special USB adaptor lead.
He went to our local Honda Dealer and was able to purchase the required lead for just £8.
I can confirm that the lead is the correct one for the job and exactly matches the photos previously posted.  Job sorted!!

I looked to see if I had a Honda adaptor to use an Ipod in my car. But could not find one. My local Honda dealer want approx £50 to supply the item that plugs into the standard USB port.

Any alternative suggestions on source of supply?

Thanks

Chiswick Honda (as usual) came up trumps and supplied connector. I then discovered that my early IPod is an unsupported version!

Sorry for the late post.

I think this was a good move by Honda. USB connectors are easily damaged by mishandling and it would be cheaper (probably!) to replace the adapter cable than an internal USB socket. I agree that the adapter cable is expensive but a USB extention adapter can be had for a couple of quid and would avoid damage to the Honda cable.

The USB cable was supplied with the car when new and should be included when the car is sold on. IMHO, as an original part it should be ordered free of charge by the Honda dealer if missing from a used Jazz purchased from a Honda dealer.

Sounds like these cars are all different.  My Jazz (called 1.4 Trend in SA) has a USB socket inside the cubby hole and a 3.5mm stereo socket on the dash.  The next model up has radio controls on the steering wheel and if something is plugged into the USB, the next button will select the next track on the MP3 player.  I find it is less fiddle to just make up a CD of MP3 recordings and play that, since I had an iPod stolen out of my previous car and it is a pricey item
If music be the food of love, play on
