When was the last time you bought a new car?

Amazingly, given my spate of buying new cars in the 1980s, the last new car I actually bought was a Vauxhall Astra 1.6GL in 1990.

After that I had company cars from 1993 until 2013. Having left that job I took the cash allowance with the new job and bought nearly new cars ever since. I honestly can’t see me ever buying new again, although I haven’t ruled out the possibility of leasing in some form.

The first new was a Citroen Saxo in 1993, the car that made me decide: never again French. Since then always bought new (five times), but Asian. Hyundai, KIA, Toyota and Honda (twice).

Always preloved before then, was young enough and fit enough to enjoy doing the work on them, not so much nowadays, besides which I might as well spend "it" rather than leave it to someone else.

Last time I bought a used car was a VW Passat in 1983

When I bought my current Jazz new in September 2020, it was the first new car I had ever bought, although I was then aged 65.

If you feel that current very high secondhand car prices will last for a decent period, buying a new car now makes more sense than it did before as depreciation will be less. If I traded the Jazz in now, the dealer would put it up for sale at very little less than I paid new.

The punishing depreciation of new cars has me running for the hills in a normal market. These days with topsy turvey values though, it's clearly a different proposition. In a normal market, you would expect to lose half the cars value in the first three years. Never made any sense to me whatsoever.

My first big motorcycle was the one and only new machine I've ever bought, a 1997 Suzuki Bandit 600. It was only a few hundred quid more than a used example at the time!

As soon as the Mk2 facelift came out, sold my Subaru Outback for new Jazz EX CVT, a great deal to boot, nowadays its a sellers used market for a variety of reasons, so not interested at new car ever again.

I have almost always run bangers (less so once I gave up working on them myself). Many years ago, one of my young workmates bought a new Fiesta XR2i and he said to me, "Why do you run old cars? You could afford a new one". I asked him how much he paid a month for his car and he told me £350. I said that was what I paid for the Peugeot 504 I was running at the time. He then said, "It could break down any day", to which I replied, "Then I will go and buy another for that sort of price, and I will still be better off than you".
He wrote the XR2i off about a month later!

Suzuki Cappuccino in 1996, still have it. It's probably worth over half what I paid for it, not bad depreciation for 27yrs.

I've had 3 brand new cars. The last 2 and a brand new VW Polo back in the 1980s. I have had a lot of used cars in my career - too many to count!

I have only had eleven and three "family" cars, in 58 years of continuous motoring. Not bad for running bangers for the most part.
