Honda Jazz Mk4 2020 - / Re: Air Con problem

I'm well aware of the known issue with condensers on some early models and phoned the garage number which puts me through to the call-centre. Oh dear. Not helpful, even said that if an aircon service didn't cure it I would still need to pay for a diagnosis, and they didn't have access to the information which could show if it was one of the affected batch!! I had asked the previous day for the dealer (Lincoln Honda) to call me back and confirm if mine was one of the affected batch, and I was waiting for the call-back.
I gave up with the call-centre and considered the next move. Half an hour later Lincoln Honda called me and we agreed that I'd book it in for an aircon service (effectively a re-gas) and if that was all it needed I would pay for that, but if it was the condenser they would change it and re-gas it at no charge under an extended warranty. What a difference - exactly what I wanted to hear! Booked in for 8.30 the next morning, got a call saying it was the condenser and they have one in stock and can change it straight away at no charge. Great service! On a six year old car!
I wonder if Honda UK has had a change of mind about the condensers as there's no talk of "a goodwill gesture" but it's definitely an extended warranty now. Anyway - if your aircon has stopped blowing cold contact your dealer!
It's gone a long way to restoring my confidence in Honda, though I'm still appalled by the fake leather seat bolsters splitting. Maybe I'll have another go at Honda UK about that one. I've had very old cars in the past with actual plastic seats which haven't split so you'd expect Honda to do better!

« Last post by MikeRO on July 19, 2026, 12:40:26 PM »Our Jazz is just over 5 years old and the ac condenser was declared faulty during the last service. Main dealer quoted £1040 to replace it although I found a local specialist who said he could do it for £500.
Out of the blue, the dealer came back and said it might be covered by 'extended warranty' if the condenser wasn't damaged by a stone. Sure enough they sent photos (of what turned out to be the leak problem mentioned above) to Honda who then gave the green light to do the repair FOC - to my huge relief.
So, if you have this problem, do get the dealer to check if your vehicle falls in to the relevant category for an extended warranty repair.
What were the symptoms before the faulty ac condenser diagnosis? No cold air?

My car also has no gas and I've been thinking about getting it regassed but idk what the figures are likeI dont know prices, especially in Ireland. But having had older cars regassed in the past a fairly high proportion leaked away again within a year, or less. Quite a few places do aircon regassing as a side line to tyre fitting etc. Staff may not be particularly competent and may be happy enough to take your money for a regas without carrying out leak testing beyond an obvious bad leak.
It might be better to pay a bit extra for an aircon specialist.

But its probably unfair to call them 'Halfrauds' and universally incompetent. Its horses for courses. Halfords do have service centres with mechanics sufficiently experienced to be approved MOT testers. So in theory they are just as likely to be as competent as any other 'stop n steer, tyre fitting , MOT testing type establishment. Its always best to find a competent local general garage, but even thats a lottery.
As for buying mechanical parts from Halfords I do get the impression you might be served by someone who 5 minutes previously was stacking shelves in their bicycle department.

To the uninitiated the bottle may appear to be almost empty and the level line is not obvious because its much lower down than you might expect.
In these circumstances a previous owner ,or the car sales staff, might have topped the coolant up to near the top. If this is done the excess coolant will be ejected onto the road until the coolant finds its own level. But some owners get into the habit of continually topping the tank up to the top. You might have seen it when it had been recently filled, before it had ejected the excess.
BUT. It is NOT normal for the level to drop to the point where no coolant is visible in the tank. If you are really sure this is the case I would seek a second opinion ,from a competent garage, ASAP.
Systems should not need to be repeatedly topped up, apart from maybe a tiny amount over a long period. Excessive loss (apart from the initial self levelling mentioned above) suggests a leak.
That said I am not an expert. I am aware that Honda cooling systems operate slightly differently to that found in most cars. My comments are based on some knowledge of 'most cars' but I think its also valid for the Honda system.

I got my car serviced, and noticed before hand that the expansion tank for coolant had nothing in it! Thought this was odd, so got mechanic to check, they said there is coolant in the radiator (after checking under radiator cap) and so nothing to worry about. But when I first got the car there was coolant in the expansion tank, so seems odd there isn't any now. So am I ok to just leave it or should I go to a new mechanic to get a different opinion. My main priority is not causing any damage to the car

I am not being entirely facetious. I understand the magic seats arrangement in the mk 4 differs from the mk 3 so maybe the mk3 differs from the mk2 The rear head restraints are more intrusive. This may, or may not, make them more cocker spaniel proof.
I had a cocker spaniel many years ago. She got very excited at first on every car journey until she settled down. I think short journeys require as much safety restraint as long journeys, if not more.
