Title: New 2019 manual Jazz - clunky gearbox?
Post by: All the jazz on April 15, 2019, 11:22:05 AM
I just bought a new Jazz and changing gears is HARD! I was really surprised once I picked up the car as it is probably the worst gearbox I have ever used as it feels really cheap and not smooth at all.

It is especially hard coming back to 1st gear (it sticks in neutral on the way to 1st). Should this resolve once the car has been driven and 'broken' in? Or is this a common issue with the new Jazz?

Brand new gearboxes will be stiff for a while, our Jazz mk1 and 2 cars have lovely slick gearchange, so no reason to think mk3 will be different.

Pity you have to rev them up, lots of gear changing.

As Clarkson said:

"One of the extraordinary things is that it doesn’t produce its peak torque until it’s turning at 5,000rpm. So to get the best out of it, you have to rev the nuts off it at all times.".

It's the only thing I don't like about them. Everything else good.

I had a loan of a 67 plate SE, with less than 350 miles on the clock, and the gear change was every bit as sweet as my 100K+ Mk 1.

Ask to test drive another one, see if it's the same.

It's normal to baulk going into 1st when the car is still moving, but it should be slick otherwise. As smiler says, take it to the dealer, explain the issue and ask if you can test drive another one to compare.

My 2019 Manual gear change is fine - very smooth.

Our 2015 MK 3 gearbox is clunky, always has been even after 3 years. Its a sort of plasticity click as it goes into or out of gear. The loan car we had was fine. We had the engine mount changed to solve a problem with a knocking noise when pulling away but this did not sort the gearbox out.

As it is a remote change a sticky mechanism could be the issue. Gearbox itself probably smooth as silk.
