Air conditioning
« on: May 18, 2019, 12:20:04 PM »
Hi, my first post so apologies if I missed a previous thread, although I did try and check.
My a/c ( 2016 Jazz 1.3 CVT) was being pathetic and needed re-gassed and got it done at local Honda merchant under warranty, thank goodness. What was quoted as a 60-odd squid job is now a £204 job due to the newer 'greener' gas used, so be warned. However, a/c is still not great ( compared to the wife's Hyundai i10 which practically chucks ice cubes at you) and on checking the temp of the air at the vent found it to be 7-9C. My old Civic managed 5C. I contacted Honda shop and was told anything under 14C (!) Is normal, although most Jazz manage 7C. Not great is it?

The trend seems to be,  the 'greener' the gas the less it cools - you can still get R134-A refill canisters from places like Halfords, but R134-A was 'greener' than the older gases that used to cool better.

Same thing happened to white paint with 'low VOC' - it started yellowing within weeks of being applied, and  the vinyl covering started peeling off our kitchen cupboard doors less than 5 years after they were fitted - yes you guessed it was the new glue mandated by EU legislation,  the old glue used to last centuries - the new stuff is useless.

I contacted Honda shop and was told anything under 14C (!) Is normal, although most Jazz manage 7C. Not great is it?

14 deg F would be fine  :o ,  and maybe 14degC would be OK when temperature outside car is 40degC,  but 14degC when ambient is only low 20's would be pathetic.

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

As of 2017, a new type of air conditioning gas is required by law for all new vehicles.

The gas, called HFO-1234yf, replaces previous refrigerants, as it produces 98% fewer climate-damaging pollutants than its predecessor, R134a.

Some manufacturers made the switch a few years ago, and already require the latest gas when serviced. Some of the vehicles that require the new gas:

Alfa Romeo 4 C
Audi A1 / A3 / A4 / A5 / A6 / A7 - Also applies to S & RS variants (2014>)
