Just had my insurance renewal documents arrive and are somewhat staggered by the bottom line, a couple of quid short of £600.
OK, so I'm the wrong side of 80, but have a good driving record, with max no-claim bonus, gone up by 13.6% since last year. Even got dash-cams front & rear.
Having said all that, I've tried various on-line comparison sites, but only one company (LV), could improve by just a few pounds on my existing figure. Tried Adrian Flux, no better!
Just out of interest, what are others members paying for a Jazz EX CVT 19 plate, fully comp, protected no-claim, courtesy car etc?
-
That's getting a bit stiff.
Can't really help, apart from adding that Hastings is by far the cheapest for my Dad's Astra. He's 87 this year.
Good luck, hope you can find something cheaper.
-
Thanks Paul
Tried Hastings Direct, even worse at £955.

To cross reference, try calling a local insurance broker for a quote. Many on Yell.com.
eg Fairweather Insurance in Chalfont St Peter Gerrards Cross 01753 882222 (who I think are near you?).
You may get a better price with a Lloyds policy rather than online.
-
This is an ongoing problem.
They put your details into their 'model' and look forward at your claim likelihood based on average and forget all about your history.
-
Try phoning The NFU Mutual Insurance Society Limited. They are not available online, but I have heard good things about them.
-
Unfortunately NFU don't insure all areas. My current area they won't cover but hopefully in the next couple of years I'm looking to move.

From the enormity of your quotes, and the fact that an insurer won't cover your area, it is beginning to sound like you live in Beirut!

Yikes! :o

West London, just north of Heathrow in a UB postcode is a medium/high risk area. I've never claimed, car is garaged, but that doesn't matter
A broker friend did some comparisons on my car in his package. The best he can do is circa £600 but if I move out to a Reading suburb, near the daughter, and is on the cards, he can do me for £250.

Almost Beirut. :D

Hi Jocko
My renewal quote IS from NFU, been with them for many years, maybe that’s the problem?

Saga used to be great for more mature drivers. Ageco are also worth a spin.
Some points worth considering if you haven't already:
If you dont already, put a named driver on the policy. Can ofter reduce the premium.
If you have any driver, reduce it to named drivers.
Check the mileage declared is accurate, don't over estimate.
Excess - could be worth taking on a little higher to reduce the quote.
Protected NCB - are you sure you want this? Never had it in 30yrs.

Saga turned out to be even worse at circa £960
I already include 2 named drivers (my Daughter & Husband), both with good driving records.
Mileage is given as 10K which I guess may be a little high in the present climate, could reduce it to maybe 7 or 8k.
Excess is £250
As Kremmen has said, I live in Solihull, West Midlands, but have a (B) Birmingham post code, which i guess may be a reason for the high costs.
-
Try a broker call Policywave. Manager to reduce my premium by £60 from last year which has gone up by £120. They have a good reputation especially on claiming.

Looks like you've ticked the obvious boxes I can think of. :D
Area does indeed have a massive impact on premiums, and there is not a lot you can do about that, or indeed your age. It would appear that perhaps you have found the market rate for the car you choose to drive.
Direct line are not on comparison sites. Worth trying.

I know that my Dad has had quotes from all of the over-50s specialist insurers, and not one of them could compete with the best mainstream insurers.
I'm sure it's just a bit of a marketing ploy, pushing themselves as a specialist insurer. These companies are all either part of general insurer, or operated as a white-label product by a big insurer.

Hope this helps.over 80 yrs

Just checked both Ageco & John Lewis Insurance.
Both over £1000 more than current renewal quote.
Also checked with my local NFU branch.
It seems that 2 of the main parameters for the quoted cost, are Age and Postcode, neither of which I can do much about.
It also seems, that the fact that I have driven, probably over 500k miles in my lifetime, without an accident that was my fault, counts for nothing with current insurance companies.
However, I did get a small reduction for reducing my annual mileage to 7000.
Many thanks for all the replies so far.

Sorry to hear you are getting no where. Frustrating.
Well, you can't move, you can't get any younger. The only option is to get a lower insurance group older car. Happy to offer you a straight swap for our 2013 Jazz! :D

I'm probably not too far behind you, and you're absolutely right - it's all computed risk and credit agencies these days. Nobody trusts anybody.
-
Have you tried Direct Line? I recently helped someone living in B13 area who is only a few years younger than yourself and had been with L V for many years. Renewal price for her Mk2 Jazz was £700, got it from DL for £400. She had one claim in 2018 for damage caused when parked and not recovered.

Last year DL wanted £550 on renewal, up from £450 even though I'd been a 25 year no claim customer. As usual I entered similar details on their website as a new customer and that wanted £600.
LV wanted £350 so I switched.
-
The only insurance companies I've been with for years are DL, LV and Admiral, I only ever moved when one company tried it on after a few years and put the price up a bit too much.
A few years ago my son had an accident in my wife's car and DL were shocking, I raised a complaint, received compensation and moved to Admiral when my next renewal was due.
I'm with LV now on a multi car arrangement but have you tried Admiral, they're usually pretty competitive ?

Hi.
Sorry we couldn't help with a competitive quotation but thanks for giving us a try.

Dan.
