So how good is your handbrake?
« on: December 03, 2021, 02:58:42 PM »
My car is a 1.3 auto, 2016, and I have owned it for half its life.  What a super all-rounder it is. If I was pointing the finger at all, it would be its inability, to climb anything more than a moderate hill, without the following traffic, wanting to climb into my boot!  But I can live with that, because it excels at everything else that it does.

My question, is one that I am sure, some people will be able to advise upon.

When I am sat at the traffic lights, waiting for them to change to green, I have to keep my foot rested on the brake pedal. I would prefer to set the handbrake, and remove the annoyance of my brake lights, dazzling the driver behind.
However, even though I apply a fair amount of pressure to the handbrake, the car is still pulled forward slowly, by the torque of the engine.  Yesterday, I replaced the rear pads, and lubricated the slider pins,  after checking that the discs were in good condition.  I can live with this, but I have not come across it, with any other vehicle that I have had.

So, thanks for reading,....does your auto do this?..... I will be interested in any replies. Thanks.

None of the four Jazz's that I owned ever had handbrake problems but when at a standstill for more than a few seconds I would slip the gearbox into neutral. That way there was no continuous pull on the transmission and the torque converter or starter clutch wasn't heating up.

Mine had a dubious handbrake until I changed pads and lubricated everything. Now is 100%

2016 Manual. No problems with hand brake, works just as it should.

For short stops I stay with the foot brake and auto stop.  For longer ones I go into neutral, handbrake and switch off.

Handbrake on my 2018 Sport Auto has never been very good at holding the car on an incline, and I don't like the fact that the Park on auto transmission is doing so much to hold the car when parked and switched off. I would never leave the car in Neutral when parked and stopped, of course, but after reading this post with others  commenting on handbrake hold, I think I should get mine checked out. Car has just passed its first MOT, and I've  owned it since there were 12,000k on it, it now shows only 15,000k, so I guess that it does not get much use since I retired and purchased it. Back to dealers maybe methinks, unless just needs bit more use?

I'm with you on the 'dazzling' drivers behind me. Though a counter-argument is to be totally selfish and just do what is safe/convenient for you ...

I always stick the handbrake on when stopped and my car doesn't slip forward as yours does unless I haven't applied the handbrake hard enough. I'm on the original (2015 cvt) pads at the rear as well.

Many thanks to all for your replies.

Just as an aside, I should say that my handbrake is set fully on, with 5 notches; the first 3,  taking “ the slack out of the cable”. I like the longer travel, so that it’s not binding, (in my minds eye!.)

Perhaps it will improve when the new pads bed in.

Just as an update.

The new pads have bedded in, but although the handbrake “feels” as it should, I do need to really, really, pull on the lever, to stop the creep, whilst in drive.

I feel a trip to Yoootube coming on!

Apply the footbrake FIRMLY and while doing so apply the handbrake. I was given that advice by a Honda mechanic. My handbrake is as good as any car I have ever owned.
