Hi, when I got my car it had a small crack in windscreen which had passed the mot as under 1cm, but it was listed as an advisory. How much do new windscreens cost? I live in the south east. Do you need to get one from a Honda dealer or are they generic?

I don't know what they cost but Auto Windscreens or the like are the way to go. You may even get a repair/replacement on your insurance, depending on your policy. I have windscreen cover on mine. Tell them it just happened.

Yeah but it was mentioned as an advisory on the mot, mot info is publicly available. Would insurance companies cross ref with basic mot check which is free to obtain?

Take your Jazz along to local windscreen specialist, eg Autoglass or similar ask then to take a look then repair the mark. Good luck

Autoglass etc may be able to repair it with injected resin significantly cheaper than a replacement.
Personally I wouldnt risk making a false claim, especially as the evidence is out there.( I am not an MP :P ) I think some insurance providers use a separate policy for windscreen cover from a specialist underwriter. These may be more experienced and vigilant in checking claims. If you are caught you could be prosecuted, and or blacklisted by the insurance industry.
But worth checking the policy exclusions. You might still be covered for a repair to prevent further damage.
If it needs a replacement screen its may be best to still use someone like autoglass. They will be more experienced than a Honda dealership, who might in fact call in a specialist to do the job. They would obtain a genuine Honda screen if necessary, or use a aftermarket one if available. But I believe it may be necessary to get the safety systems camera recalibrated to the new screen. I dont know if screen specialists can do this, or whether it would need to be done by a Honda dealer.

I am not suggesting you make a fraudulent claim. If the damage happened between insuring the car and getting an MOT that is acceptable. If the MOT was done before you bought and insured it that's a no-no.
Most chips are just repaired using resin which is fairly cheap.
Regarding camera calibration, it is an early Mk2 we are talking about. It has a mirror on the windscreen!

I was very sceptical about using the Rain-X repair kit, a tenner from Halfords, but it worked great on a 1 cm crack in my screen. Hardly visible now.
Now is a good time to use it because it needs UV light to cure , the windscreen guys don't worry about the weather as they have UV lamps.

agree, it cannot repair the glass if it can't penetrate. It's no good for cracks in the inner layer of glass.
Most stone chips have a hole so the resin can reach the crack under pressure , in fact I've heard a small hole can be drilled into the glass but I'll leave that one to the experts !
